  • EAI Specialist iWay Aims to Integrate Collaborative Applications

    October 12, 2010 Dan Burger

You’ll find more than one dilemma barking for attention in IT departments these days. But at or near the top of the list is the topic known as enterprise application integration. That’s where iWay Software fits into the equation.

iWay’s newest product, CEP Enable, is designed to remedy the integration puzzle that naturally exists between enterprise information and social collaborative applications.

  • .NET in the Midrange: Not Migration So Much As Integration

    October 11, 2010 Dan Burger

The fact that Microsoft is making an impact in IBM i shops is no shock. Sometimes the sparks fly and you can feel the electricity in the air though depending on who is doing the talking and what the listener wants or doesn’t want to hear. Many of the AS/400 faithful bristle whenever Windows or .NET is mentioned, but you can’t ignore the growing need to integrate these two systems.

Two weeks ago in The Four Hundred, Microsoft platform migration executive Dee Hester talked about the successes his company is enjoying in the IBM midrange market. His calculations

Untapped capabilities in DB2 for i, the integrated relational database at the heart of IBM i 6.1 and 7.1, can be put to use meeting business requirements that have executives nervously searching for answers. Your first discovery is that a database does far more than store information. Take a closer look at what you have here.

This is an information management system, not a container. It’s not just a barn, a

  • Microsoft Technologies Gaining Ground in the IBM Midrange

    September 27, 2010 Dan Burger

The battle of the midrange continues. And Microsoft continues to put the heat on IBM. We know it best as a struggle for IBM i shops to remain i-centric when it comes to their mission critical applications as Microsoft technologies gain stronger footholds in enterprises. Last week I talked with Dee Hester, who heads up platform migration sales in North America and Latin America for Microsoft. Here’s the view from where he sits.

Hester works for Microsoft’s Enterprise Partner Group (EPG), which has a goal of accelerating the adoption of Microsoft technologies at the enterprise level and supporting business

  • Central Florida User Group to Disband in December

    September 20, 2010 Dan Burger

Tony Morelli has been a member of the Central Florida Midrange User Group since the mid-1990s. He’s served on the local user group’s board of directors for years and has seen the highs and the lows. At the end of this year, he’ll watch CFMUG fade away. At its meeting last month, the board set December 31, 2010, as the final day of business for organization.

“We haven’t had people responding to and attending our meetings,” Morelli. “I believe it is just a lack of interest. We were willing to do whatever people let us know they want. But nobody

  • Power7 Planning Beyond the Bells and Whistles

    September 13, 2010 Dan Burger

While IBM gets busy with its Fall 2010 Power of the i road show schedule (see the Redbooks, White Papers, and Other OS/400 Resources section of Four Hundred Monitor for dates and cities), business partners have their own plans for getting out and talking about Power7 and IBM i 7.1. Where Big Blue tends to make grandiose presentations that showcase all the bells and whistles, the business partners spend more time talking with individuals about the best fit for their purposes.

Recently I spoke with Jim Kandrac, president of United Computer Group (UCG), a business partner based in Cleveland, Ohio,
