  • Wavelink Streamlines OS Upgrade for Barcode Scanners

    July 24, 2007 Alex Woodie

Users of Wavelink‘s emulation solutions for barcode scanners will be able to rest easy during operating system upgrades, as the Utah company recently announced it has adopted a way to make the OS upgrades seamless and painless when using Symbol devices from Motorola.

This is quite a departure from previous techniques, according to Wavelink. In the past, updating a device’s operating system required taking the device offline, packaging and shipping the device to the facility where the updates were to take place, manually installing the update, and then reinstalling the host settings. Obviously, the new approach will save countless hours of precious IT staff resources.

MC 4.2 brings other goodies, including the capability to pick up where an update left off if a wireless connection should fail in the middle of downloading an operating system update. The new release also includes bandwidth throttling and blackout windows, which will be helpful for downloading large amounts of data to a site over low-speed connections, as the maximum number of simultaneous downloads can be specified and downloads can be restricted to certain times.

The new operating system update feature in MC 4.2 will be available with Motorola’s MC9090 for CE 5.0, the MC3090 for CE 5.0, and the WT4090 for CE 5.0. Future plans call for supporting the feature with the MC9090 for Windows Mobile, the MC70 for Windows Mobile, and the VC5090 for CE 5.0.
