  • Genuitec Touts Adoption of Rational Alternatives

    September 14, 2010 Alex Woodie

Genuitec, the developers of the MyEclipse line of Java development tools that provide a low-cost alternative to IBM‘s Rational Application Developer, has achieved some IBM i followers with its MyEclipse Blue product. The Flower Mound, Texas, company recently announced a milestone with the one millionth installation of Pulse, a companion product to MyEclipse Blue.

Pulse is included with all editions of its J2EE development tool MyEclipse, including the MyEclipse Blue variant, which is designed to support IBM‘s WebSphere stack, and is used by some developers working with the IBM i server, officials with Genuitec say.

Pulse is a lifecycle management solution that helps teams of Eclipse developers keep their tools in synch, and assist with the distribution of Eclipse applications, as well as Java Runtime Environments (JREs).

The free Community Edition of the Pulse family is designed to help individuals or small teams of Java developers to acquire, profile, and share their Eclipse-based tool stacks, while the Managed Team Edition, which costs $60 per user per year, is aimed at providing full tool customization and synchronization of for small to medium sized development teams. There is also a private label edition of Pulse that provides full customization of the Pulse features.

Of particular importance is Pulse’s support for the past four releases of the Eclipse stack, including versions 3.3 Europa, 3.4 Ganymede, 3.5 Galileo, and 3.6 Helios. The backwards compatibility ensures a broad coverage of Eclipse release, and lessens chances that incompatibilities will creep into the project because someone was using an older tool.

The one-millionth installation was met with applause from Mike Milinkovich, executive director of the Eclipse Foundation. “Congratulations to Genuitec for its unwavering support of the Eclipse Community,” he states in a press release. “Pulse, like many other powerful Eclipse-based technologies, continues to attract world-class developers to the Eclipse platform. As we continuously enhance our code base and march toward Eclipse 3.7 next summer, we’re pleased that Genuitec will continue to support developers using Eclipse with its Pulse management software.”
