  • The Dangers of Temporarily Changing User Profiles

    January 12, 2005 Hey, Ted

In “Monitoring for System Request Menu Option 2,” you answered a question from Paul, who needed to write a CL program that temporarily changes a user profile. I always worry when I hear someone is going to temporarily change a user profile and then change it back. Lots of things could happen that would cause problems. Paul realized System Request menu option 2 (ENDRQS) could cause problems that would prevent him from returning the user profile to its original state. What neither you nor Paul mentioned, however, is that options 1 and 90 from the System Request menu could also

  • Get Organized with the WDSc Tasks View

    January 5, 2005 Bruce Guetzkow

The iSeries Projects perspective of WebSphere Development Studio client allows you to organize source members so that you can better manage project requests. To more effectively manage individual tasks of a project, WDSc provides the Tasks view.

Although some functions within WDSc automatically add tasks (saving a Java source member with syntax errors will add errors to the view), you can also manually add your own tasks as reminders of steps left to complete. Tasks can be specified for a project, a source file, a source member, and even lines within a source member. You can use these tasks to

  • How to Use the *NOPASS and *OMIT Parameter Options

    January 5, 2005 Hey, Joel

I notice that you use *nopass extensively in your free xRPG procedures to offer flexibility in your procedure calls, but you don’t seem to use *omit. I recently came across an example of a prototype that used both for the same parameter. Can you explain the difference between the two, why you use one but not the other, and why someone would use them together like this?

    –Rob

Let me start by explaining the two options and how they differ.

    *NOPASS

The *nopass parameter option allows you to not pass the parameter at all. Consider the prototype for the

  • Admin Alert: Preparing for an OS/400 V5R1 to V5R3 Upgrade

    January 5, 2005 Joe Hertvik

I recently started a project to upgrade a multi-partition AS/400 from OS/400 V5R1 to V5R3 (IBM also refers to i5/OS V5R3 as OS/400 V5R3). For those readers who are not accustomed to OS/400 upgrades, I have been taking notes to help you better understand the basic process. In this article, I’ll discuss some of the preparation necessary to perform such an upgrade.

My target AS/400 830 9406 configuration has four partitions (A, B, C, D), with A being the main partition. Partition A is not a production partition; it is only used to control the other three partitions. At the
