    September 14, 2011 Alex Woodie

Companies that use Ricoh‘s automated document factory (ADF) offering will be able to do all kinds of new things with PDF files that were previously impossible to do without converting to a different format, the company claims.

Ricoh’s Production Print Solutions unit (formerly InfoPrint Solutions Company, formerly the printing division of IBM) claimed several industry firsts with last week’s update to InfoPrint ProcessDirector, its PDF solution used by high-volume print operations. From the sound of it, Ricoh is squeezing management benefits from PDF documents that previously were the domain of the high-end advanced function presentation (AFP) document format.

  • SAP Talks Up HANA In-Memory Database at TechEd 2011

    September 13, 2011 Alex Woodie

SAP has big plans for HANA, the high-performance analytical appliance that will receive lots of attention and scrutiny at SAP’s TechEd 2011 show this week in Las Vegas. And the interesting thing is, not all of SAP’s plans have to do with business intelligence. Sure, the bulk of the focus today is on how quickly HANA’s in-memory design can rip analytical workloads. But SAP executives see a time when HANA–with its slim columnar structure–eventually replaces the relational database that underlies the ERP system.

The relational databases that are popular today were designed 20 years ago and were largely shaped by

  • iQ for Business Looks to Grow BI Market Share

    September 13, 2011 Alex Woodie

While some IT segments look bleak, it is a good time to be in the business intelligence software market. One software firm that hopes to be part of that equation is iQ for Business Software (formerly iQ4bis Software), which is in the process of re-energizing under a new CEO.

IT Jungle readers may remember iQ for Business as the BI company that puts the entire user manual

Infor affiliate Lawson Software last week acquired Approva, a developer of continuous controls monitoring (CCM) software that helps customers “get clean and stay clean” when it comes to regulatory compliance.

Approva’s Windows-based CCM software is designed to help users find the areas of their enterprise applications where they not in compliance with specific components of regulations, such as the segregation of duty requirement in Sarbanes-Oxley, and then keep them in compliance.
