  • Tenable Adds IBM i Support to Security and Configuration Tool

    February 28, 2012 Alex Woodie

Tenable Network Security recently added support for the IBM i OS with Nessus Scanner, a tool that analyzes server and network systems for security holes and lax configuration settings. The new plug-ins will enable IBM i shops to do one of two things: discover shortcomings in their security configurations, or document their adherence to IBM‘s security standards for the purpose of regulatory compliance.

Tenable claims that Nessus is the world’s most widely deployed vulnerability and configuration assessment product, and that it has become the de facto standard tool in its class among security professionals, network penetration testing teams, and

  • Innovatum Makes ROBAR Labeling Solution Available to IBM i

    February 28, 2012 Alex Woodie

The Windows-based offering, which is used to print labels, barcodes, and RFID tags for GS1 compliance and ePedigree mandates of FDA-regulated companies, isn’t running directly on the IBM i server. But thanks to the development of a middleware component called iROBAR, the labeling solution can now be driven by RPG applications on the IBM i server.

ROBAR is a barcode and RFID label solution built primarily for pharmaceutical, medical device, and biotechnology manufacturers companies that are regulated by the Federal Department of Agriculture (FDA).

  • Linoma Adds Secure Mail Module to MFT Tool

    February 28, 2012 Alex Woodie

Linoma Software last week unveiled Secure Mail, a new component of its GoAnywhere Services managed file transfer (MFT) tool that allows users to send documents securely via email. The software, which Linoma is demonstrating at this week’s RSA conference, will be particularly useful in unplanned, ad-hoc file transfer scenarios.

Secure Mail works similar to regular email, with one big exception. Like regular email, users can send multiple files to one or more recipients. However, instead of actually attaching the document to the email, Secure Mail replaces the attachments with a unique URL that the recipient can use to download the

  • Altova Adds Support for DB2/400 Logical Files in MissionKit

    February 28, 2012 Alex Woodie

Supporting the logical file construct, which is unique to the IBM i platform, bolsters Altova’s efforts to attract IBM i customers to its powerful data manipulation tools, and keep them happy.

MissionKit includes eight handy utilities that allow IT professionals to accomplish a range of XML, data, and unified modeling language (UML)-related tasks. Anchoring the kit is its popular XML editor, called XMLSpy. MapForce, meanwhile, provides data conversion and related capabilities, UModel allows developers to visually

    February 28, 2012 Alex Woodie

Raz-Lee Security has added a range of new features to AP-Journal, a DB2/400 audit trail utility that’s useful for detecting potentially fraudulent activity. Better integration with security information and event management (SIEM) tools and expanded coverage beyond data to IBM i objects and application files mark the new release.

AP-Journal was first unveiled nearly four years ago to help IBM i shops clamp down on unauthorized and fraudulent activity on corporate computer systems. The software works with IBM i journaling to monitor field-level changes in certain sensitive DB2/400 data files, such as an employee’s salary. A series of filters allows

  • Cat Dealer Still Likes Coda for IBM i Financials

    February 28, 2012 Alex Woodie

Thompson Machinery, the authorized dealer for Caterpillar equipment in central and western Tennessee and central and northern Mississippi, has decided to stick with Coda Financials running on the IBM i OS, and in fact will expand its usage of the Java-based software, UNIT4 CODA announced last week.

The ability to “fire” a service provider, as Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney put it recently, is one of the biggest benefits of our capitalist economic system. And while Romney admitted to getting a bit of joy out of firing health care providers that don’t stack up, the same level of fiduciary glee

  • IBS Touts IBM i Experience for New IBM Business Partner Status

    February 28, 2012 Alex Woodie

IBS, which several years ago changed course and headed down the Windows path as the company’s new strategic platform for running its ERP system, says the company’s experience with the IBM i platform is behind the company’s upgraded IBM business partner status, from Advanced to Premiere Business Partner.

It’s too early to say if IBS is re-embracing IBM i (which the company insists on calling iSeries, which ceased to exist as an official name in May 2004 when IBM changed iSeries to eServer i5). The company is still a Gold Certified Partner of Microsoft, so it’s clear

    With version 10.1, IBM
