  • FalconStor Offers OS/400 Option with Virtual Tape Library

    August 24, 2004 Alex Woodie

FalconStor has added OS/400 support to its disk-based virtual tape library appliance. The Melville, New York, company now offers OS/400 support as an option with the enterprise edition of its IPStor VirtualTape Library, a disk-to-disk backup appliance that emulates many of today’s popular tape drive formats and can help reduce cost and complexity in data centers through tape library consolidation.

In the same way that server virtualization technology, such as OS/400’s advanced logical partitioning (LPAR) technology, is fueling the consolidation of many smaller Linux and OS/400 servers onto a smaller number of larger servers, virtual tape libraries are helping companies

  • Bytware Launches ‘Recycle Bin’ for OS/400

    August 24, 2004 Alex Woodie

What happens when you accidentally delete a file or a library on OS/400’s Integrated File System (IFS) from your PC? If you’re lucky enough to have back-ups, you could restore the data from tape. But if the file or library had just been created, you are simply out of luck. Yesterday Bytware launched a new data recovery tool called StandGuard Recycle Bin, which prevents accidental or malicious deletion of data on the IFS.

PC users have long been accustomed to the safety net provided by Microsoft‘s Windows Recycle Bin (one of several ideas that Microsoft “borrowed” from the Apple

  • Software Testing Provides Kanawha with ‘Model’ for Improvement

    August 24, 2004 Robert Gast

Like many companies in service industries these days, the Kanawha Insurance Company is paying an outside company to manage a portion of its IT operations. The change was made in January, when it outsourced its iSeries servers, including any custom programming work that its Genelco Software Solutions insurance applications might need. When it came to quality assurance testing, however, Kanawha elected to keep the work in-house, and to expedite the testing process using a suite of tools from Original Software.

Kanawha Insurance Company is one of the country’s top insurers, ranking among the largest privately owned life- and health-insurance

  • CCSS Bolsters Wireless iSeries Management

    August 24, 2004 Alex Woodie

CCSS started shipping a new release of its wireless systems management tool for OS/400 servers this month. QRemote Control Version 2.0 has several new features, including an e-mail client and enhanced security that should help systems administrators keep a closer eye on iSeries servers from GSM mobile phones.

CCSS launched QRemote Control in late 2000 near the peak of the wireless hype cycle. At that time, wireless applications were set to be the next big thing, especially with widespread expectations in the industry that speedy third-generation (3G) mobile network were sure to soon become a reality.

    Now, in 2004, mobile

  • IBM Launches the eServer i5 Model 550 After All

August 17, 2004 Timothy Prickett Morgan

If you got the impression that the eServer i5 Model 550 server was not going to be announced (like I did a month ago) or that it had been pushed out to October (as some business partners believed), you were, like us, wrong. Because today IBM is indeed announcing the four-way tower and rack-mounted i5 Model 550 server. This new server brings the i5 line to parity with the eServer p5 Unix servers, which are also based on the Power5 processors and the Squadron server architecture.

The Model 550 is heavily based on the technology inside the Model 570 that

  • Which Thin Client Makes Sense, Or Does Any?

    August 17, 2004 Dan Burger

The popularity of thin clients has been on the rise for several years as many organizations are taking a closer look at the benefits provided by these desktop options, compared with PCs. Improved security is certainly an important issue, as is cost reduction in areas such as support and system management. Last week’s article “Thin Clients Making Advances in a PC World” gave a market overview of the thin client versus the PC landscape and how it compares with the OS/400 market. This week we look a little closer at the thin client itself and the processes involved in sorting

  • Wake Up, Sunrise 2005 Is Almost Here

    August 17, 2004 Alex Woodie

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is getting lots of attention as a promising new supply chain technology. But for companies in the North American consumer goods supply chain, there’s an equally important technology deadline on January 1 called 2005 Sunrise, which requires U.S. and Canadian companies to be able to scan the eight- and 13-digit EAN barcodes used in Europe, as well as the standard 12-digit UPC barcodes. However, a lack of preparedness could spell trouble for both manufacturers and retailers.

The 2005 Sunrise deadline was formed seven years ago by the Uniform Code Council as a way to create a

  • Thin Clients Making Advances in a PC World

    August 10, 2004 Dan Burger

It’s a PC world. That’s PC as in personal computer, not politically correct, although it is arguable that owning a PC, whether at home or at work, is so ingrained in our minds that is has a certain political correctness about it. Take away our PCs and you’ve taken away our productivity. Well, that’s assuming you are productive with your PC. Or is it really just a case of feeling secure with your PC?

We have reason to feel both productive and secure with our PCs. Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and Microsoft have poured billions of

  • Positive Pay Yields Positive Results At Stimson Lumber

    August 10, 2004 Victor Wortman

Many people shudder at the mention of the law of unintended consequences, but unforeseen results aren’t always negative. Ask Greg Baumgardner, IT manager at Stimson Lumber Company. When Baumgardner’s CFO asked him and his staff of four to research positive-pay solutions, the objective was simply to beef up security of the company’s payment operations by introducing a check fraud intervention process. But Baumgardner’s search set off a far broader corporate initiative that completely transformed the company’s back-office operations.

Stimson Lumber is a leading forestry and wood products company with roots tracing back to the mid-1800s. The company owns some 450,000
