  • Exercises in Simplicity

    May 3, 2005 Alex Woodie

iSeries servers don’t require a lot of muss and fuss. They typically just keep running, day after day, which can be bad if you’re in the support business (remember the Maytag Man?) or in the server business (IBM secretly wishes your trusty old AS/400 would die so you’d finally upgrade to a new iSeries). While the OS/400 ecosystem is, in a way, the victim of its own success, customers such as the USDA and Sun National Bank benefit by running lean and mean.

With 2,441 AS/400s in use, the USDA’s Farm Service Agency has to be one of the

  • Lakeview Adds Quick Start Service to Disaster Recovery for SMBs

    May 3, 2005 Dan Burger

Any company doing tape backup lives with the ramifications of taking its system down for as long as it takes to perform the backup. Reducing downtime is a big reason alternative backup methods are being considered, and lost data between tape backups, should an unplanned downtime occur, adds unwanted drama to IT staffers lives. Products such as Lakeview Technology‘s MIMIX dr1 provide an alternative, and Lakeview has extended its services to reach more customers in the small the medium size business (SMB) market.

MIMIX dr1 is promoted, primarily to SMB companies, as a disaster recovery solution. And, indeed, it

  • ASC’s SEQUEL Database Tool Goes Multi-Platform

    May 3, 2005 Alex Woodie

Imagine being able to manipulate and query iSeries, Unix, Linux, and Windows databases using the same tool, and to do so comfortably from an iSeries-centric environment. It may sound like a pipe dream, but it became a reality last week when Advanced Systems Concepts launched a new release of SEQUEL, its database query and analysis tool for the iSeries.

SEQUEL is a data access tool that provides a range of capabilities, not the least of which is replacing IBM‘s Query/400 software. In addition to running Query/400 objects, users can generate and distribute reports, build “executive dashboards,” drill down into

  • Kisco Launches Spool File Distribution Software

    May 3, 2005 Alex Woodie

Kisco Information Systems last week announced new software for moving OS/400 spool files between iSeries servers, or OS/400 partitions. SpoolMover/400, as the new FTP-based product is called, only needs to be installed on the sending machine, which makes distributing reports to many servers easy, the company says.

Rather than installing and configuring FTP on each OS/400 server that needs a copy of a report (such as a corporate sales report, for example), the new SpoolMover/400 product could do the same job from a central location. Once SpoolMover/400 is installed on the source server, it’s a simple matter to distribute that

  • FalconStor Updates Virtual Tape Library Offering

    April 26, 2005 Alex Woodie

FalconStor is offering new connectivity options with its VirtualTape Library (VTL), an appliance that enables companies to set up disk-to-disk backups for iSeries and other servers. With FalconStor’s VTL version 3.1, the company has upgraded the device’s firmware to include new emulations of IBM tape drives and libraries for OS/400 servers, as well as new support for StorageTek storage software, Novell SuSE Linux servers, and new 64-bit processors from Intel.

FalconStor’s VTL appliance is designed to help users set up and provision a high-speed disk-to-disk backup system, without changing existing tape backup software and procedures. The VTL–which sits between

  • Jacada Builds Foundation for SOA with Fusion 2.0

    April 26, 2005 Alex Woodie

Jacada fleshed out its service oriented architecture (SOA) strategy last week when it unveiled Jacada Fusion 2.0, a new version of its flagship software suite for exposing business processes locked up in OS/400, mainframe, Unix, and Windows applications, and rearranging them in new and useful ways. With this release, Jacada has focused on providing a tighter, more integrated experience across the Fusion product line, as well as paving the way for future enhancements.

It’s been almost a year since Jacada rolled out its Fusion product line and unveiled its new strategy for helping organizations get more out of their IT

  • Seagull Partners with Cordys for Web Service Orchestration

    April 26, 2005 Alex Woodie

Like other providers of legacy integration middleware, Seagull Software sees the impact that Web services and service oriented architectures (SOA) are having on how users interact with their host systems. Last week Seagull announced a new partnership with Jan Baan’s software startup, Cordys, that will provide Seagull customers with new opportunities for hooking Web services together and managing their interaction.

Cordys is a young software company focused on providing tools to help users connect their applications using new Web services technologies. The company was founded in 2004 by Baan founder and former CEO, Jan Baan, and other former executives

  • All You Need for B2B is GIS 4.0, Sterling Says

    April 26, 2005 Alex Woodie

Face it, every company participates in business to business (B2B) transactions on some level. Whether that means a simple FTP transmission, participation in an EDI network, or publishing of product data through the advanced UCCnet repository, B2B transactions are the lifeblood of business. While there are many forms that B2B transactions can take, Sterling Commerce says it has everything covered in Gentran Integration Suite (GIS) 4.0, which it started shipping earlier this month for the iSeries and other platforms.

Sterling’s GIS is an Enterprise Java-based software product that companies can use to set up, execute, and then monitor the exchange

  • Network Intelligence Adds iSeries Monitoring to Security Appliances

    April 19, 2005 Alex Woodie

Network Intelligence is the latest company to join the ranks of security providers serving the iSeries platform. Last month the Massachusetts company, driven by new regulations mandating good security practices among public companies, unveiled a new release of enVision, the software that powers its line network security appliances that can now monitor OS/400 logs for things like failed sign-on attempts and changes to system settings, which could be indicators of a security breach.

Network Intelligence uses the term “security event management,” or SEM, to describe what its three lines of Network Intelligence Engine appliances do. What gives Network Intelligence an

  • EVault’s Online Backup and Recovery Option Adds New Features

    April 19, 2005 Dan Burger

You don’t hear many IT professionals asking for more complex and more expensive software. At least not on the buyers’ side. That’s why companies are taking a closer look at disk-to-disk backup and recovery that sends data offsite using IP networks. This approach promises (but don’t they all) the twin benefits of reduced complexity and cost savings. EVault, which launched the OS/400 community’s first online backup technology in September 2004, has more to say on this topic.

Breaking out of the routine of traditional tape-based back ups and recoveries is sort of a love/hate thing for many iSeries shops.
