  • Applied Logic’s FEU Provides Powerful Database Options

    April 19, 2005 Alex Woodie

While the focus of many new OS/400 products these days is tightening data and restricting access to data, there’s still a need for powerful database utilities that give administrators direct access to DB2/400-resident data and other files. File Edit Utility (FEU) from Applied Logic is one of the flexible products in this class. This month, Applied Logic is shipping a new version of FEU that adds new data validity checking, an XML export option, message file handling, and other features.

These days, many iSeries administrators, programmers, and operators are occupied with the task of locking down their systems and–more importantly–documenting

  • iSeries-centric Call Center Suite Renamed iNspire

    April 19, 2005 Dan Burger

In most organizations there are silos that separate the resources applied to data assets and those that are applied to telecom. Therefore it is not surprising that the two sides do not understand one another well. The goal of call center technology is to merge the resources of these two departments so that customer service is enhanced through efficiencies gained by data accessibility. One of the prominent companies doing this in the iSeries market is iMessaging Systems.

Management of the call-flow–how and where calls are managed–requires application development skills. The development is done in a scripting language that controls

  • SecureZIP for iSeries Now Available from PKWARE

    April 12, 2005 Alex Woodie

After being announced nearly a year ago and undergoing extended development and beta test periods, SecureZIP for iSeries and zSeries are now available, the product’s developer, PKWARE, announced last week. SecureZIP for iSeries and zSeries combine PKWARE’s traditional PKZIP file compression with PKI certificate or password-protected file encryption capabilities, which the company expects to be warmly accepted by large enterprises looking to comply with new regulations mandating the safe handling of data.

PKWARE has been in the file compression business since the company’s founder, Phil Katz, released the first open source PKZIP product in 1986. Since 2003, the Milwaukee

  • Mid-Comp Overhauls Snapshot/400 to Improve Real-Time Monitoring

    April 12, 2005 Alex Woodie

Mid-Comp International is now shipping a new version of its popular performance monitoring tool for OS/400 servers, called Snapshot/400. The Australian software developer says it completely re-wrote the product for version 10, which is now called Snapshot/TSC (for Total System Control), to reduce the impact of real-time monitoring, make it easier to add new reporting modules, and to include the new generation of i5 servers for capacity planning purposes.

Snapshot is a client-server application, with agents that deploy on the OS/400 server to continuously collect performance data and monitor queues, and a Windows-based component where administrators can “see,” via colorful

  • Datalogics Speeds Document Creation with PDF Library 7.0

    April 12, 2005 Alex Woodie

iSeries shops generating high volumes of PDF output may be interested in hearing about Adobe PDF Library version 7.0, an updated software developer kit from Datalogics that’s used for integrating high-speed PDF generation directly into applications running on various operating systems, including OS/400. Datalogics boosted the product’s performance, security, and programmability with version 7.0, which Datalogics recently made available.

The Adobe PDF Library is a collection of C, C++, and Java components that allow programmers to embed high-speed creation and manipulation of “true Adobe PDF” documents (so-called because they strictly adhere to the PDF standard and maintain cross-platform compatibility) from

  • Califon Systems Ships Database Analysis Tool

    April 12, 2005 Alex Woodie

Califon Systems recently introduced a new database analysis tool that’s designed to help programmers and administrators discover how their applications are using data and business processes in preparation for regulatory compliance initiatives or new development projects. The new product, called Countermind, was written in Java, which the company says enables it to run against all the major database systems running on any Java-supported operating system, including DB2/400 on iSeries.

Although Countermind doesn’t fall into any neatly defined product category, the capabilities of the new product are a blend of an application discovery tool (such as the one developed by mainframe

  • BMC Updates iSeries Management and Planning Products

    April 5, 2005 Alex Woodie

With 331 different products for every major platform, it’s sometimes easy to forget that BMC Software is actively developing OS/400 software, too. In fact, the Houston, Texas, software giant has some pretty sophisticated products, namely PATROL for iSeries–Predict, a capacity planning tool, which IBM sells with its own part number, as well as PATROL for iSeries, a systems management product. BMC recently introduced new releases of both of these products.

If you’re looking for “lights out” automation of your multi-platform data center, BMC’s PATROL series should be on your short list. The PATROL series allows administrators to monitor many servers

  • Profound Logic Keeps Focus on Simplification with RPG Smart Pages

    April 5, 2005 Alex Woodie

Profound Logic Software is now shipping a new version of its RPG Smart Pages (RPGsp) development environment that further simplifies Web development for OS/400 servers. New templates, wizards, and code snippets in RPGsp version 4.0, as well as an improved RPG and DDS code converter and the capability to run queries in a browser, help RPG programmers create powerful iSeries-based Web applications more quickly than previous releases, company officials say.

Since RPGsp was first delivered about two years ago, Profound Logic and its chief technology officer, Alex Roytman, have been working to build on that initial release, which had the

  • IPS Eases IPDS Printing with OnePrint G2 for Windows

    April 5, 2005 Alex Woodie

Integrated Print Solutions unveiled a new product last week that allows companies to use standard Windows-connected printers to print Advanced Function Printing (AFP) jobs originating on iSeries and mainframe servers. By encapsulating AFP’s Intelligent Print Data Stream (IPDS) into good old Internet Protocol (IP) packets, OnePrint G2 for Windows enables users to gain the benefits of IBM‘s high-end AFP architecture, but without the high cost of AFPDS printers.

IPS has been in the IPDS-conversion business for some time. The Richardson, Texas, company has a couple of hundred customers using its OnePrint ServerExpress appliance, which combines IPDS print conversion with

  • NetManage Streamlines Mobile Access to Host Data

    April 5, 2005 Alex Woodie

NetManage revealed a new middleware product last week designed to help organizations quickly roll-out new applications for accessing host data from handheld computers. The new software, called OnWeb Mobile, enables users to present data from iSeries and other hosts as a Web service running on personal digital assistants (PDAs), smart phones, and other handheld computers.

The popularity of mobile e-mail applications, particularly Research In Motion‘s BlackBerry devices, has led a resurgence of interest in mobile corporate computing, the likes of which we haven’t seen since the initial dot-com frenzy in 1999 and 2000. While that initial enthusiasm in mobile
