  • inFORM Widens Forms Design Options with iDocs 4.0

    February 8, 2005 Alex Woodie

Last week inFORM Decisions introduced a new release of its iDocs suite that allows OS/400 shops to use any Windows-based graphic design tool to create electronic forms. People who are skilled with front-end programs like Adobe Acrobat or Microsoft Word can now use the iMap component in iDocs 4.0 to quickly create professional looking forms or reports from iSeries spool data.

The iDocs is a modular suite of document management tools that enable OS/400 shops to replace their pre-printed forms and checks with electronic documents, which saves money and adds flexible distribution options. The iDocs suite uses Printer Control Language

  • Linoma Serves Up Better-Looking Screens with aXes

    February 8, 2005 Alex Woodie

Linoma Software launched an updated release of its iSeries middleware last week that renders better-looking screens. The new release of aXes, a Web-enablement product that dynamically converts OS/400 green screens into browser-based GUIs that don’t require interactive processing, now makes better-looking GUIs. Other new features include the capability to view OS/400 spool files and access the DB2/400 database through the browser, and an OS/400 implementation of the Lua scripting language.

Aterial XML eBusiness Server, or aXes, which was developed by Linoma’s Australian partner, Arterial Software, is an interesting product that hits two birds with one stone. By capturing 5250

  • SkyView Addresses Compliance with New OS/400 Security Service

    February 1, 2005 Alex Woodie

SkyView Partners introduced a new OS/400 security service last week called SkyView OnCall, designed to make it easier for iSeries shops to comply with certain provisions of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and other new industry regulations. Instead of guessing at what auditors might require for SOX compliance, the Seattle-area company says, companies are better off outsourcing that job to SkyView and its team of OS/400 security experts, who have a good idea of what auditors may expect.

“What we’ve seen with SOX audits is a moving target,” says SkyView cofounder John Vanderwall. “The idea of SOX compliance is interesting. Comply with

  • DataMirror’s iCluster 2.1 Offers Full Mirroring of iASPs

    February 1, 2005 Alex Woodie

To simplify storing data for different areas of their business, iSeries shops are increasingly turning to independent auxiliary storage pools, several sources have said. In support of this trend, DataMirror recently started shipping a new release of its OS/400 clustering application, iCluster Version 2.1, which offers full support for mirroring of iASPs, as well as improved monitoring and autonomic functions.

The iCluster is DataMirror’s flagship high availability offering for iSeries shops. While the company also offers its older High Availability suite, the iCluster product, which is based on OS/400 cluster services and its integrated heartbeat monitoring and automated failovers, now

  • MKS Refreshes Change Management Suite, Adds ‘Dashboard’ View

    February 1, 2005 Alex Woodie

MKS today launched a new version of its cross-platform suite of change management software, called MKS Integrity Suite 2005. The suite includes updates to the OS/400 and open systems change management components, Implementer and Source Integrity, as well as major enhancements to the Windows-based Integrity Manager component, which gains the new Requirements 2005 plug-in and a new Management Dashboard view to help users comply with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act, or SOX, has been a major catalyst for sales of Implementer and Source Integrity, says Ellyn Winters-Robinson, vice president of marketing for MKS. However, while sales have been good,

  • Stampede Regains Edge for Compression of Notes/Domino R6

    February 1, 2005 Alex Woodie

When IBM rolled out Notes/Domino R6, the software gained new compression and acceleration capabilities to give Notes users better response times and to speed database transfers. That wasn’t good news for Stampede Technologies, which built its business on providing compression and acceleration for Notes/Domino with its TurboGold product. At Lotusphere last week, Stampede rolled out a new release of TurboGold that regains its edge in Notes/Domino R6 compression and acceleration.

TurboGold Enterprise Edition 3.0 is the newest generation of real-time compression and acceleration solutions for Notes clients and Domino servers from Stampede. Several new technologies make their TurboGold debut

  • 2005: A SOX Auditor’s Odyssey

    January 25, 2005 Alex Woodie

The year 2005 is shaping up to be a banner year for auditors performing Sarbanes-Oxley Act audits and, perhaps, for sales of software that helps companies comply with the new regulations. While it appears many companies are choosing to use manual processes to meet their first SOX deadline, iSeries software vendors in the source code management and database audit trail spaces–two primary SOX-related tool categories–are hoping that companies realize the value of software automation to ensure continued compliance.

If you work in a public company with a market capitalization of $75 million or more, the first SOX deadline, on November

  • iSeries Plays a Central Role in MoMA’s Expansion

    January 25, 2005 Alex Woodie

A lot of things were different when the Museum of Modern Art reopened its doors in midtown Manhattan last November, following a two-and-a-half year, $425-million renovation. First, there is MoMA’s new building, an architectural gem in itself, in addition to new exhibits and educational facilities. The museum’s IT systems have also seen a bit of an overhaul, but one thing that hasn’t changed is the iSeries’ role in running MoMA’s back-office applications. An iSeries future at MoMA wasn’t necessarily in the cards, however.

MoMA’s technology refresher began several years ago, when Steven Peltzman took the role of chief information officer

  • CXL Debuts iSeries Security Reporting Tool

    January 25, 2005 Alex Woodie

English developer CXL unveiled a new software utility this month called AZScan that tells users how security settings have been configured on their OS/400, Unix, or OpenVMS midrange systems. In addition to revealing what the actual security settings are, the sub-$500, PC-based AZScan also provides an explanation of settings and recommends ways to make them more secure.

AZScan is actually three products in one, and a license to AZScan gives users the right to run security scans with any of the individual products, which include AScan (OS/400 V4R4 and later), VScan (for HP/DEC Alpha/VAX systems), and UScan (for 75 different

  • Brooks Launches ExcelliPrint for IPDS Conversion

    January 25, 2005 Alex Woodie

Brooks Internet Software has developed a new software product that enables regular Windows printers to replace IPDS printers in OS/400 and mainframe environments. By converting IPDS print datastreams into PDF or PCL format, ExcelliPrint enables less expensive Windows printers to stand in for their pricier IPDS printing brethren, while simultaneously preserving the advantages of IBM‘s AFP architecture, such as support for graphics, barcodes, and bidirectional communication, the company says.

ExcelliPrint works by emulating a high-end IPDS printer. The software runs as a Windows service on a Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003 PC, and continuously
