  • PowerTech Security Survey Says Most IT Departments Could Do Better

    October 19, 2004 Dan Burger

Maybe your idea of bad security is leaving the front gate open at San Quentin. Although the prison guard responsible would likely get a harsh reprimand for such an error, there are iSeries and AS/400 security failures that are the equivalent of leaving the prison gate open 24/7. And if you think it doesn’t happen very often, you might want to read a white paper just released from PowerTech Group that was based on survey information collected during the past 18 months.

How bad is security on the iSeries? Let’s just say it’s not a pretty story. But it’s not

  • Curbstone Native OS/400 Credit Card Software Makes Debut

    October 19, 2004 Alex Woodie

About 12 years ago, Ira Chandler wrote the industry’s first credit card transaction processing software that ran natively on OS/400. The software, which was eventually marketed and sold by ROI, was a hit, but then Chandler watched as ROI eschewed the native approach and pushed a cross-platform credit card processing application instead. Two years ago, Chandler left ROI and launched his own startup, called Curbstone, but now he’s “back in the business,” writing native OS/400 credit card software again.

When ROI acquired GO Software, in 2000, Chandler was not happy to see ROI’s credit card software, the Java

  • PeopleSoft Rolls Out a Host of New EnterpriseOne Applications

    October 19, 2004 Alex Woodie

While the hostile takeover bid by Oracle continues to hang over PeopleSoft like a dark cloud, it didn’t deter the Pleasanton, California, company from going ahead and making a slew of EnterpriseOne announcements at the APICS conference last week. There are more than 250 new features in the former J.D. Edwards ERP application across four components, including CRM, Demand Flow Manufacturing, Sales and Operations Planning, and the new RFID Processor application.

    EVEN FLOW

So-called “lean” manufacturers looking to roll out new products quickly, without tying up plant capacity or storage space unnecessarily, are good candidates for the new Demand Flow

  • GST Targets IBM with Internal AIT Tape Drives for i5 and p5

    October 19, 2004 Alex Woodie

GST last week debuted its first internal tape drive that works in the new “Squadron” line of Power5-based eServers from IBM. GST claims that its new line of AIT drives, which install in the new i5 and p5 servers, offer better price performance than the internal tape drives that IBM sells with those servers. Could GST be offering a better deal than IBM? Let’s take a look at the numbers to see.

While GST previously offered internal drives on the iSeries, this is the first time that the Southern California company has supported the new i5 and p5 servers

  • Hit Your New OS/400 Apps Hard with a TestBENCH ‘Stress Test’

    October 12, 2004 Alex Woodie

Say you’re working on a new OS/400 order lookup program that your biggest customers will be able to access. What happens when it goes live for the first time: does it sink or does it swim? A new release of Original Software‘s TestBENCH for iSeries application testing suite, announced last week, features a new “stress testing” capability, as well as “date warping” and “results compare,” which should take some of the guesswork out of deploying new applications.

TestBENCH for iSeries provides testers and developers with record, playback, and verify capabilities for identifying problems in OS/400 batch, interactive, and service

  • WorksRight Drives Down Mailing Costs with Three New Products

    October 12, 2004 Alex Woodie

WorksRight Software last week announced the availability of new geocoding software for the iSeries server. Given a postal address, the Z4 LAT/LON program calculates the exact coordinates of that address, which leads to more accurate addresses and lower mailing costs for the user. In addition to geocoding, the OS/400 mailing software specialist recently introduced new software based on the U.S. Postal Service’s Delivery Point Verification and Residential Delivery Indicator technology.

Companies in different industries use geocoding for different things. A financial services firm might use geocoding with census information to get a better idea of its customers’ demographics, while a

    October 12, 2004 Alex Woodie

OS/400 shops looking to get the most out of the database enhancements in i5/OS V5R3 may want to take a look at the latest SQL middleware from HiT Software. The San Jose, California, company makes ODBC and OLE DB middleware that is specifically designed for connecting Windows clients and servers to OS/400 database servers, and with last week’s release, it does so faster than ever.

IBM delivered significant enhancements to DB2 UDB for iSeries (commonly referred to as DB2/400) with the release of i5/OS (also called OS/400) V5R3 this spring. A new SQL Query Engine, better file reorganization capabilities,

  • BOSaNOVA and Wyse Look to the High End of Thin Clients

    October 12, 2004 Alex Woodie

Two of the players in the thin client market have recently introduced new thin clients that feature processors running 1 GHz or more, which is faster than what has typically been found in these PC alternatives. BOSaNOVA touts the capability of its new 1000 Series to run Java applications, while Wyse Technology says that its new Winterm V and S series thin clients will excel in graphics-intensive environments.

BOSaNOVA started shipping a new line of thin clients in August that are specifically designed for handling Java applications. The new high-end BOSaNOVA 1000 Series includes the Linux-based LTC 1000 and the

  • ASNA Launches Monarch for RPG-to-.NET Migration

    October 5, 2004 Alex Woodie

ASNA last week launched a new migration tool called Monarch, which, the company says, can help iSeries shops move their RPG applications to Microsoft .NET in a matter of weeks, as opposed to the months or years such a migration could entail. With Monarch and existing ASNA language and database tools, the company says it now offers everything for a whole or partial migration of RPG applications to .NET, and an upgrade path to service-oriented architectures.

ASNA has been in the business of moving RPG applications to Windows–and making Windows developers out of iSeries developers–for some time now. The company’s
