  • Access OS/400 Servers from Wireless BlackBerry Devices

    June 1, 2004 Alex Woodie

BlackBerry, meet your iSeries. Epoch Integration, a developer of management software for the wireless BlackBerry devices made by Research In Motion, recently launched a new version of its NeedTEXT Shell terminal emulation software that allows users to access, monitor, and manage OS/400 servers through a secure command line interface displayed on their BlackBerry screens.

Epoch’s NeedTEXT Shell customers historically have been Unix and Linux users, but some of its customers had OS/400 servers they wanted to access or manage through their BlackBerries, say Epoch officials. The company responded with NeedTEXT Shell Version 3.0, which introduces a new feature

  • eStorage Offers 70 GB iSeries Disk Drive for $995

    June 1, 2004 Alex Woodie

eStorage, the only independent provider of internal disk for OS/400 servers, last week announced three new 70 GB iSeries disk drives. The new drives include one 15K RPM model, one 140 GB, 10K RPM drive that has been “shortstroked” to boost access time, and one standard 10K RPM model that eStorage says is 65 percent less expensive than the comparable 70 GB disk from IBM.

The Irvine, California, storage vendor says that its new 4327-15K, 4327F-10K, and 4327-10K disk drives are the industry’s first third-party 70-GB internal disk solutions for the OS/400 server. IBM introduced its own 70

  • Agent Integrator Adds a Human Touch to Call Center Software

    May 25, 2004 Alex Woodie

It can be one of the most irritating things when dealing with computerized telephone systems. Once you’ve “zeroed out” from a phone tree to talk to a real live human, you have to repeat all the account information you just entered into the keypad. iMessaging Systems, a developer of OS/400 interactive voice response software, says it has solved this dilemma with its new iVoice-Agent Integrator, which maintains data as you are transferred from a computerized session to a live agent.

The new Agent Integrator software, which iMessaging Systems announced at the recent COMMON conference, works with iVoice, the Merrimack,

  • IBM Encourages AFP Adoption with New Infoprint Offerings

    May 25, 2004 Alex Woodie

IBM is attempting to entice small and midsized OS/400 shops to adopt its Advanced Function Presentation (AFP) page description language through a new bundle of hardware, software, and services it calls Infoprint Express for iSeries. AFP has largely been used in high-volume, mission-critical printing environments, but IBM says that any iSeries shop can benefit from AFP, especially with the enhancements in the latest release of its AFP-based electronic document delivery software, Infoprint Server for iSeries V5R3.

IBM officials say AFP is more reliable than other page description languages because it enables bidirectional communication between a printer and computer. With AFP’s

  • Touchtone Delivers OS/400 CRM Through WebSphere Portal

    May 25, 2004 Alex Woodie

Mobile employees will be able to access and update DB2/400 data using their cell phones or other Web-enabled wireless devices with Touchtone‘s new Wintouch for WebSphere application. The software is a collection of “portlets,” served from IBM‘s WebSphere Portal Server software, which provide access to certain functions in the OS/400-based Wintouch CRM application, such as order entry or account summary screens. Eventually, the entire Wintouch suite will be delivered as portlets.

Wintouch is one of the few native OS/400 CRM programs that use the DB2/400 database and connect directly to customers’ OS/400-based ERP and home-grown AS/400 applications. The

  • Jacada Rounds Out Integration Suite with Client/Server Offering

    May 18, 2004 Alex Woodie

Jacada today introduced WinFuse, a new integration tool for exposing as Web services the data and processes housed in Windows-based client/server applications. The company, which spent three years developing the software, says WinFuse is the first product of its kind to provide message-level integration for a large swath of the sprawling collection of legacy Windows applications in use for which there are no clean APIs or other good integration points. WinFuse is similar in design and is complementary to Jacada’s integration software for OS/400 servers and mainframes.

The word “legacy” is rarely used to describe client/server Windows applications. After all,
