  • At Long Last, IBM i Finally Gets Power9

February 14, 2018 Timothy Prickett Morgan

The most important part of the Power9 rollout for the vast majority of IBM i customers has finally happened: Big Blue has lifted the veil on the Power9-based “ZZ” systems that we have been hearing about for a few months now and that are being delivered in the Power S914, Power S922, and Power S924 servers.

These are three of the six machines based on the ZZ design, and they are the only ones that can IBM i without any restrictions. Two other machines, which are called the Power H922 and Power H924, were created explicitly to run SAP’s HANA …

  • New IBM i Technology Refreshes Announced; Available Mid-March

    February 14, 2018 Dan Burger

IBM yesterday announced that Technology Refresh 8 (TR8) for IBM i 7.2 and TR4 for IBM i 7.3 will provide support for Power9 hardware, enhancements for RPG, security enhancements, and a variety of new capabilities for licensed products. The support for Power9 will be covered elsewhere in this issue of The Four Hundred. Here, we’ll provide an overview of the IBM i operating system, licensed programs, and software.

2FA solutions are the emerging standard for authentication in the enterprise, following the long downward spiral in the effectiveness and efficiency of using passwords to confirm identity. Nearly everybody carries a smartphone these days, and enterprises have tried multiple ways to incorporate that fact into their authentication …

Old code is today’s technical debt. New code is tomorrow’s technical debt. Maintaining code is the albatross around our necks. What can you do besides kick your tech debt down the road? Find some food for thought on that topic in Monitor this week.

You’ll also learn a few things about where small to midsize businesses are spending the bulk of their IT budgets, which you can then compare to your own budget. And finally, an article that points out that CEOs are investing more in advanced technologies such as AI, but they aren’t planning to invest in retraining their …

  • IBM i PTF Guide, Volume 20, Number 6

    February 14, 2018 Doug Bidwell

Welcome to the latest edition of the IBM i PTF Guide. This week, here is our update on the Spectre/Meltdown (SM) speculative execution security vulnerabilities. First, we have moved our table of fixes to the master spreadsheet for the IBM i PTF Guide because it is just easier to manage. There are now 16 fixes for V7R1, and 9 for each of the other two releases, in addition to the firmware fixes. They are all MFs, which in all likelihood means an IPL is required to apply them. The good news is that nothing has changed in about eight …
