  • Google Close to Launching IBM i Cloud Service, Will Says

    June 4, 2018 Alex Woodie

One of the laments of Power chip types everywhere is the lack of a public cloud service for Power applications. While Linux and Windows folks can run their X86 workloads on multiple public clouds, the opportunities for hosting IBM i, AIX, or Power Linux workloads are limited to so-called private clouds. But according to IBM i chief architect Steve Will, that could soon be changing.

While neither IBM nor Google have made any official announcements about Google running IBM i in its public cloud, Will talked openly about the relationship between the two tech giants at COMMON‘s PowerUp conference …

  • UCG Becomes The Guardian Of Contract Management

June 4, 2018 Timothy Prickett Morgan

The small and medium business market for systems has always been larger than the AS/400 and its progeny, and even if the AS/400 loomed larger in decades past, it has been a long time since people in the IBM i market thought that everything can and should be done on the platform. Some applications work just fine running alongside the AS/400 and its integrated database, and other applications are freestanding and complementary.

Jim Kandrac, the founder and president of UCG Technologies, the IBM i system reseller located outside of Cleveland, Ohio, that is best known for its VAULT400 cloud …

  • Guru: Ready or Not! Part 3 Of Big Changes In RDi V9.6, Compare/Merge, Code Coverage, and More

    June 4, 2018 Susan Gantner

This is the third in my series of tips on RDi V9.6. In this one I’ll cover the new compare and merge support, along with improvements to code coverage and a few other smaller enhancements in V9.6. I originally thought this would be the last in the series, but IBM recently made available a new point release that introduced enough new features to mean I’ll be adding at least one more tip.

    Compare And Merge

The ability to compare the content of two source members is not new to RDi, but with V9.6 the facility now offers the option to …

  • Fresche Takes $60 Million To Fuel Growth, Consolidate Market

    June 4, 2018 Alex Woodie

Fresche Solutions is making big moves, and readying itself to make even bigger ones. With $60 million in the bank – and a line of eager equity firms willing to invest millions more – the IBM i software and services firm is poised to significantly expand operations in a bid to capture what executives foresee as a loosening of budgets and uptick in demand around application modernization.

Fresche Solutions had just announced the $60 million financing round at the COMMON PowerUp conference two weeks ago, and its CFO was itching to get out on the expo floor. That’s where the …

  • Happy Days Are Here Again For Systems

June 4, 2018 Timothy Prickett Morgan

A combination of increases in memory and CPU prices, beefier configurations often with GPU or FPGA accelerators, and outright ebullient demand for compute capacity is making the server business look like it is exploding when it is merely expanding at a more-than-healthy clip.

In the first quarter, according to the box counters at IDC, server revenues were up an astounding 38.6 percent to $18.82 billion, the kind of number we have never seen in the history of the server racket. Server shipments – and it is getting hard to count the nodes sometimes – rose by 20.7 percent to just …
