  • Visual LANSA Customers Can Now ‘Portalize’ Their Apps

    September 2, 2020 Alex Woodie

LANSA is well known to IBM i shops for its low-code developer tools. But the company also has its share of shrink-wrapped applications. With the recent launch of pre-build Web portal called Portalize, it’s added another to its collection.

Portalize is a portal framework that Visual LANSA customers can use to get a secure Web portal up and running with a minimal amount of effort. The product, which LANSA introduced in June, supplies the core components that an organization would need to get a portal off the ground, such as security, account creation, authentication, and logging capabilities.

    The software, which …

  • CNX Releases Beta of Valence 6.0

    September 2, 2020 Alex Woodie

CNX last week announced the beta release of Valence 6.0, the newest version of its Web development framework and portal for IBM i. Valence 6.0 brings a whole new look and feel to Web applications created with Valence, as well as updates to administrative functions, the data access layer, and more.

Valence is a set of tools for creating Web and mobile applications that run under IBM i’s Apache Web server and access existing RPG business logic. The product has several components, including a JavaScript library; a set of RPG procedures for integrating various JavaScript libraries (Ext JS, React, or …

  • Four Hundred Monitor, September 2

    September 2, 2020 Jenny Thomas

Labor Day is right around the corner, which means the end of summer and the kids are headed back to school. Just like many of you have already done with your jobs, many students are adjusting to doing their schoolwork from home. In my house, day one was bumpy. My son couldn’t get into his first class. But by day two, the kinks were worked out and he was (begrudgingly) officially back to school. While we may be newbs at online schooling, there are plenty of experts in the field right here within our IBM i community. If you’re feeling …

  • IBM i PTF Guide, Volume 22, Number 35

    September 2, 2020 Doug Bidwell

There’s not a lot going on in this week’s edition of the PTF guide. No new links, no new defectives, I don’t even have a tip for you. But why ask for trouble? Sometimes it’s a better idea to just enjoy the quiet while we can since we never know what could be around the corner. Now would be a great time to do a little housekeeping around your shop, make sure everything is up to date, and do a little research into upgrading your system if that’s something you’ve been considering. As usual, you can find the regular updates …

  • IBM’s Possible Designs For Power10 Systems

August 31, 2020 Timothy Prickett Morgan

In the past two weeks, we have been telling you about the future Power10 processor that will eventually be able to support the IBM i platform as well as AIX, Big Blue’s flavor of Unix, and Linux, the open source operating system that is commercially exemplified by IBM’s Red Hat Enterprise Linux distribution. The leap in performance with Power10 is akin to those we saw between the generations spanning from Power6 through Power9.

This week, we want to contemplate the systems that will be using the Power10 chip and how they will be similar to and different from past and …

  • Can You Get There From Here? The Road to the Cloud

    August 31, 2020 Pete Czornohus

The Connectria team presents a three-part series addressing concerns IBM users have about the platform and its future. Part One: System and remote administration.

Digital transformation, modernization, application agility, blah, blah, blah.

While esoteric buzzwords seem endemic of our times (see what I did there?), we’re all tired of them. Digital transformation is more than a trending buzzword or common phrase. It’s a lengthy and involved process. Before getting started down that road, ask yourself these questions: How old are your applications? Are they older than your kids? How about older than your married kids? Has your application outlived …

  • Guru: Reading Nested XML Using SQL

    August 31, 2020 Jonathan M. Heinz

XML is a data-interchange format, not a relational database management system. For this reason, using SQL to query XML data can be challenging, as what would be stored in two relational tables are placed in one element of XML. To put it another way, detail data is nested under the header data.

I would like to share a way of using SQL to extract nested data from an XML file. I found this method useful when testing a change to a process that creates XML to be sent to customers. I can use this SQL to quickly check that the …

  • COVID-19 Tracking Comes to iSeries Central

    August 31, 2020 Alex Woodie

Companies that use IBM i time and attendance software from UKG (formerly known as Kronos) got a nice surprise from the vendor earlier this year: A free reporting template that helps them perform contact tracing in the event that a worker comes down with COVID-19.

As a developer of time and attendance software, UKG (which stands for Ultimate Kronos Group following Kronos’ merger with Ultimate Software earlier this year) is to build tools that track when and where an employee has worked. As it turns out, that’s just the sort of data that public health officials need when conducting …

  • IBM Clarifies Utility Pricing, Adds Solution Edition For New Entry Power Server

August 31, 2020 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Back in the middle of July, IBM announced new entry Power Systems servers – tweaks to the Power S914, Power S922, and Power S924 to be specific – that had expanded PCI-Express 4.0 I/O capability as well as a new utility pricing scheme on the Power S922 and Power S924 that helps to lower the capital outlay for buying servers and makes it a little bit more like the economic experience on the public clouds.

This utility pricing, known as the Power Systems Private Cloud Solution, has been available the Power E950 midrange and Power E980 high-end systems since it …

  • Drilling Down Into The Power10 Chip Architecture

August 24, 2020 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Last week, we told you some general things about the future Power10 chip from IBM based on a roadmap briefing that we got from the IBM tech team ahead of their presentation at the Hot Chips 32 chip conference last week. IBM was gracious enough to let us talk about the Power10 chip generally before that presentation, because we have a Monday morning deadline no matter what. And this week, we can drill down into the Power10 architectural details a bit more.

The presentation at Hot Chips was given by William Starke, the chief architect of the Power10 processor who …
