  • Entry Servers: IBM i Versus Windows Server, Redux

April 10, 2023 Timothy Prickett Morgan

No comparison between similar but different things is ever perfect. It is the nature of language, constructed of similes and metaphors, as well as science, which speaks in generalities but craves ever-finer precision. It is no different when trying to compare different system platforms, which we do quite often around here at The Four Hundred and have for three and a half decades.

The comparison between the Power S1022s running IBM i and a Dell PowerEdge R7515 running Windows Server and SQL Server, which we did last week, needed some refinement, I learned from an intrepid reader who reminded …

  • Performance Management: A Personal History, And Turning A New Page

    April 10, 2023 Doug Mewmaw

The term “performance management” is broad, comprehensive, and uniquely personal depending upon the system, situation, and experience of the user defining it. I stumbled into the world of performance management early into my career, without even knowing it. As I reflect back on my career, it is also natural to reflect upon the history of performance management.

I thought this reflection might be interesting to not only the old pros out there but also the new guys just coming into the industry. I have been fortunate to be on an interesting journey, and one that is about to change not …

  • Wanted: Code For IBM i Contributors

    April 10, 2023 Alex Woodie

If you have a knack for IBM i development and a passion for open source, then Liam Allan, the creator of the Code for IBM i project, would like a word. That’s because Allan, faced with large demands from his day job at IBM, is seeking help from the IBM i community to develop and maintain the Code for IBM i project.

April 10, 2023 Timothy Prickett Morgan

We have heard through the rumor mill for weeks that we should expect Technology Refreshes for the current releases of IBM i sometime this week, and Tuesday being a traditional announcement day for Big Blue, it is reasonable to assume that this will happen on April 11. With history as a guide, it is reasonable to also assume that there will be some kind of tweaks to the Power Systems hardware and to parts of the software stack that IBM has on this machines, including but not limited to, IBM i.

This being the belly of the Power10 hardware cycle, …

  • IBM i PTF Guide, Volume 25, Number 15

    April 10, 2023 Doug Bidwell

It is Spring Break in a lot of places, and also Easter and Passover as we go to press, and so it is not at all surprising that there is not a lot of activity in the IBM i PTF Guide this week. We took the opportunity to retire 7.2 worksheet, check the archives, and, DLB_PTF_04/01/23_B25N14.XLS for the last worksheet. Any changes to V7R2 going forward will be detailed here instead of the Guide.

    There are High Impact/Pervasive tweaks for all currently supported releases – IBM i 7.5, IBM i 7.4, and IBM i 7.3 – and a fix list …
