  • There Were Actually More Power Systems Price Hikes Than We Thought

April 25, 2022 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Last week, we told you about two price hikes on Power Systems hardware, software, and services that were announced on April 13 and take effect for hardware and software on May 7 and for selected Software Maintenances services on July 1.

One of the price changes came in our announcement letter roundup and the other came through the business partner network, and on a hunch on Sunday night with another story still needing to be written, I logged into the IBM announcement letter system to see if anything had happened while I was away last week sitting in the sun …

  • ALL400s Survey Paints a Picture of IBM i Community

    April 20, 2022 Alex Woodie

It’s been three years since John Rockwell ran an ALL400s survey, which he periodically ran several times before. At the urging of members of the IBM i community, Rockwell recently ran another survey, and he shared his conclusions with IT Jungle.

At first glance, the results of the latest ALL400s survey, which includes responses from more than 600 people, shows what you might expect. For starters, we all know the IBM i community is getting older, with retirements looming for some. That shouldn’t come as a surprise. But as one drills down into the results themselves, a more nuanced …

  • REPL Tool Gives RPG Developers Immediate Feedback

    April 20, 2022 Alex Woodie

If you’ve ever wanted to quickly know what a small snippet of RPG code does but do not want to take the time to compile a test program and go through the debugging process, then you might be interested in rpgle-repl, a new open source Read-Evaluate-Print-Loop (REPL) utility that was recently shared with the IBM i community.

Tom Sharp, a senior developer at a financial software provider in the UK, says he created rpgle-repl after receiving numerous requests from his colleagues about what particular pieces of RPG code actually did.

“The first place to check would always be the IBM …

  • Infor CM3 to Provide On-Prem Alternative to Cloudy M3

    April 20, 2022 Alex Woodie

For years, Infor has been leading with the cloud when it comes to M3, the ERP system formerly known as Movex. But now, the software giant is readying a new hybrid deployment option called CM3 that will run in a Linux or Windows container and IBM i.

Long before Infor completed its Lawson acquisition in April 2012 — even before Lawson finished its acquisition of Intentia in 2006 — plans were solidly in place to migrate the core RPG code underpinning the Movex suite to Java, thereby opening the software to run on platforms besides just IBM i, its historical …

Arvind Krishna recently participated in an interview on the evolving role of business and technology. While you don’t have to be IBM’s CEO to recognize how rapidly computing is changing the way we do business, his perspective is definitely of interest to our readers. In our Top Story this week, you can read what he had to say as he looks back and what he thinks is to come on the road ahead. Spoiler Alert: Hybrid cloud, AI, and cybersecurity all play an important role.

  • Inflation Finally Comes To IBM i Platform Prices

April 18, 2022 Timothy Prickett Morgan

With the inflation rates rising around the world, and particularly strongly in the United States, it was bound to happen sooner or later: IBM is raising prices on key software for Power Systems machines as well as on selected Power9 hardware.

With entry and midrange machines based on Power10 iron just around the corner – probably announced in May around the COMMON POWERUp 2022 conference in New Orleans from May 23 through 26 and shipping sometime in June – it might seem like a weird time to be raising Power9 hardware prices. But there could be a logic to it. …

  • How Good Are Your Backups? Wait, Don’t Answer Too Quickly

    April 18, 2022 Pete Massiello

It’s probably a good day to review your backup strategy and your backup itself. If you haven’t done a backup in a while, set some time for either later today or this weekend to get a good backup. Remember, your recovery is only as good as your backup. If you have never tested your recovery, it’s probably a good time to look at that as well.

Over two months ago, Russia invaded Ukraine, and then the United States and its allies put some crippling sanctions on Russia. For every action, there is usually a corresponding reaction. The news is abuzz …

  • Top Five Failures In State of IBM i Security For 2022

    April 18, 2022 Alex Woodie

HelpSystems last week officially unveiled its annual State of IBM i Security report, the 18th straight year for the series. Like with past reports, the 2022 version highlights some of the continuing challenges that IBM i customers face when trying to secure their systems. A few key areas stand out above the rest.

The IBM i server is a bit of an enigma when it comes to security. While it is widely perceived to be one of the most secure computing platforms on the planet – and “virus-proof” to boot – the reality is that a good number of IBM …

  • As I See It: Transitions

    April 18, 2022 Victor Rozek

Over the past two years, as many of us sequestered, masked-up in public, dodged strangers, and kept friends at arm’s length, our socially distanced conversations shared a common, oft-expressed yearning: “I just want my life back.”

Now that we’re in a lull between variant fronts, millions of us are anxious to reclaim our old, comfortable and predictable lives. They may not have been perfect, but they were at least manageable, set in a world we knew how to navigate.

Beyond familiarity, our old lives were even more central to our identity. As sociologist Anthony Giddens notes: “A person’s identity is …
