  • DataMirror Expands into New Digs and Operations in Europe

April 23, 2007 Timothy Prickett Morgan

High availability and data transformation software maker DataMirror said last week that it is going to put some feet on the street in two countries in Europe to help it expand its business.

DataMirror said that it would be opening offices in the Italian cities of Milan and Rome and would also open an office in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Milan is the industrial center of Italy, and Rome is its business center and capitol, while Amsterdam is the industrial, business, and governmental capitol of the Netherlands. So these three cities are obvious ones to expand into in their respective

  • California Software Rebrands Itself as Infinite Software

April 23, 2007 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Legacy application migration environment specialist California Software has rebranded its company to reflect the name of its most recent products, Infinite Software. The company makes its living helping customers move their mainframe and i5/OS-OS/400 applications to Windows, Unix, and Linux platforms.

The fact that California Software’s products (as well as those that it acquired from the formerly distinct Unibol) are used to move applications off the System/3X, AS/400, iSeries, and System i5 platforms over the past three decades does not make the company popular among some platform enthusiasts. But, application rehosting environments are nonetheless part of the ecosystem, and

  • Calling SQL Functions Directly From a High Level Language Program

    April 18, 2007 Hey, Mike

The Create SQL Function from the article SQL Cross Platform Interoperability: The Proper Function creates a CLE *srvpgm on the iSeries. Can this be accessed from an RPGLE program? If so, what would the prototype look like? I am not familiar with C and cannot get this to work, so far, on my own.

    –Gene

Note: The code accompanying this article can be downloaded here.

This astute reader noticed that when creating an SQL-based function, DB2 generates an ILE C service program behind the scenes. This prompted the reader to inquire if there was a way to call the

  • My Favorite Keyboard Shortcuts for RSE

    April 18, 2007 Susan Gantner

When using RSE for editing my CL, DDS, RPG or COBOL code, I find that I can save a lot of time by using keyboard shortcuts for functions that would otherwise require that I take my hands off the keyboard to use the mouse. So I thought I would share a few of my favorites. Many of the shortcuts I use are standard for other Windows-based applications that I also use for email, spreadsheets or text editing.

These include some very common ones such as:

    • Ctl-C to copy, Ctl-V, or Shift-Insert to paste, and Ctl-X or Shift-Delete to cut.

  • Two Ways to Audit Your Backup Strategy

    April 18, 2007 Hey, Joe

Nice article on five things that kill backups. In regards to auditing backup results, however, I find it a little tedious to check joblogs as you recommended. I prefer to use the Display Log command for reviewing the system history log to check backup results. It’s easy to spot missed objects from this display. I also like to use the Display Backup List command (DSPBCKUPL) for Sarbanes-Oxley compliance.

Thanks, Bill for bringing up two ideas I hadn’t thought of when I wrote that article. Here are the details on what Bill is discussing and how it can help

  • Global Hires Beer, Rolls Out New Web Site

    April 18, 2007 Alex Woodie

Global Software, a developer of an Excel-based reporting tool for ERP systems, is aiming to change how it interacts with its customers and its partners. Last week the company announced the launch of a new Web site, www.myspreadsheetserver.com, and the hiring of a new manager of strategic accounts, Bjorn Beer.

Spencer Kupferman, vice president of corporate affairs for Global Software, says the company launched www.myspreadsheetserver.com to give more attention to Spreadsheet Server, which is Global’s most popular product. “We felt our flagship Spreadsheet Server product was worthy of its own website based on the demand for the product

  • Oracle Declares a ‘Renaissance’ for J.D. Edwards World

    April 17, 2007 Alex Woodie

For years, J.D. Edwards World was the best-selling ERP system for the AS/400, the gold standard of the platform IBM built specifically to run business applications. Then Y2K hit, IT spending tanked, and J.D. Edwards landed in the hands of competitor Oracle, leading people to wonder if the end of World was near. While it won’t likely regain its seat at the head of the class, Oracle took steps this week with the delivery of World A9.1 to infuse new life into the aging application and reward loyal users with much-needed new capabilities.

The roots of J.D. Edwards World

  • Shield Launches ‘DR for the Masses’

    April 17, 2007 Alex Woodie

Shield Advanced Solutions last week unveiled a new disaster recovery (DR) solution for the i5/OS server, called Receiver Apply Program/400 (RAP/400). The new product is based on the remote journaling technology IBM developed years ago, primarily for ensuring high availability (HA) of AS/400s. But instead of high availability, Shield is using remote journaling as a way to bring high-speed data replication and next-generation DR to the i5/OS masses.

There is no question that remote journaling has had a very large impact on IBM’s AS/400-iSeries-System i business over the last seven years. Before remote journaling was available, providers of high availability

  • IBM Addresses Object-Level Security with New Tool

    April 17, 2007 Alex Woodie

You have choices in how you implement security on your i5/OS server. Data-centric security implemented at the folder or object level is the most rigorous type of security you can implement, but it is also the toughest to deploy and maintain. To address this challenge, IBM last week unveiled Secure Perspective for System i, a new tool that uses natural language processing to make it easier to secure i5/OS machines at the object or folder level.

Object-level security is powerful stuff on the i5/OS server. It gives administrators the ability to say what objects will be available to which users

  • More Details Emerge on Query/400’s Java-Based Replacement

    April 17, 2007 Alex Woodie

As part of the latest round of System i announcements last week, IBM provided more details on the new Web-based query tool that it’s developing with OEM partner Information Builders as a replacement to Query/400. The new product will be called DB2 Web Query for System i, and it should ship later this year, IBM says.

In March, IBM and business intelligence software developer Information Builders announced plans for IBM to sell a version of Info Builder’s WebFOCUS software to buyers of new i5/OS servers and upgrades. The software would be bundled with the increasingly outdated (but still popular) Query/400
