  • A Proper Accounting Of The Power Business

October 25, 2021 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Big Blue might be preparing for the spinout of its Kyndryl managed services company, now slated for early November, and its new financial presentations, which we reviewed two weeks ago, but that task is not yet done and until it is we are still getting the same financial view of IBM in the third quarter of 2021 ended in June. It was not a particularly memorable quarter when it came to IBM Systems group.

But it is looking like IBM is going to be able to pad a better 2022, with Kyndryl taking on a huge amount of software …

  • Talking Power Systems Deals With The Boss

October 25, 2021 Timothy Prickett Morgan

What a relief when you speak the same language with someone in the business. In any business. But particularly with someone in the AS/400 and IBM i business, who has been at it about the same time as you, has seen the same stuff as you, has the same frames of reference as you, and who knows what the hell you are talking about even if they don’t agree with you all the time.

That’s how it is with the boss at UCG Technologies, that being president and founder Jim Kandrac, who is proud of his city of Cleveland and …

  • Guru: Quick And Handy RPG Output, Take 2

I am pleased today to revisit a topic I wrote about just over seven and a half years ago. I do so for two reasons. First, I’ve made a slight improvement to my routine. Second, I’d like to provide more examples of this routine in action. My previous article suffered from a paucity of examples. I can’t believe I let that happen.

I’m talking about the writeln subprocedure, a handy routine that I use to write unstructured text to a spooled file. I derived the inspiration for this routine from Pascal, a programming language I used heavily when I was …

  • HelpSystems Goes Phishing For Cyber Threat Hunter

    October 25, 2021 Alex Woodie

HelpSystems dipped into the security pond again with its acquisition last week of PhishLabs, a Canadian company that develops technology designed to protect organizations from various Internet-based threats, including malicious emails, account takeover, and data leakage. As is the case with most of HelpSystems’ acquisitions, its IBM i customer are expected to be among the beneficiaries.

For over a decade, PhishLabs has been developing a security platform designed to find and identify and counteract threats to customers. As its name suggests, the company got its start with identifying phishing attacks. Its founder and chief technology officer, John LaCour, grew frustrated …

  • Various Power Systems Updates And Tweaks

October 25, 2021 Timothy Prickett Morgan

While many IBM i shops have a lot of their core applications on that platform, there are lots of shops that deploy Windows Server for adjacent databases and applications and in other cases some shops have AIX or Linux as well. Windows Server doesn’t run on Power iron, of course, which we have always thought was a shame and still is almost two decades since Windows had a brief showing on Power before Microsoft and IBM pulled the plug.

But the important thing, here in 2021, is that customers have alternatives if they need certain applications and they want to …

  • Yes, AI Is Happening on IBM i, and It’s Happening Now

    October 20, 2021 Alex Woodie

Artificial intelligence is often thought of as a futuristic technology that may have repercussions for IBM i, but only in the future. Maybe AI will be important to IBM i about the same time when we have flying cars and moving sidewalks. But as a recent POWERUp presentation by an IBM cloud and AI architect shows, AI is already happening on the IBM i server, and it’s happening today.

Benoit Marolleau, who is the cloud and AI architect for the IBM Client Center Montpellier (France), made a compelling case for IBM i shops to start exploring how they can potentially …

  • Original and Midrange Dynamics in IBM i Test Tie-Up

    October 20, 2021 Alex Woodie

In the fast-paced world of DevOps, it’s critical to test your applications in a timely fashion. The quicker you can spot bugs and other issues, the quicker you can fix them and get the new features into production. That’s the gist behind a new partnership recently unveiled by Original Software and Midrange Dynamics, two of the leading providers of DevOps and test automation tooling, respectively.

On September 30, the two vendors announced they have entered into a partnership that will not only see them marketing to their respective customer bases, but also integrating their respective offerings to deliver, as they …

  • Expanding Fields Is A Bigger Pain In The Neck Than You Think

    October 20, 2021 Andrew Ireland

Remember the Y2K problem, when companies had two-digit dates for years in their applications and the millennial turn was coming and they suddenly needed a four-digit date so all the math would work out right comparing the present, future, and past? Well, every time you need to change a field length in your source code – which almost always means making it bigger, not shorter – you have to suffer through a mini Y2K crisis.

Yes, the Y2K crisis did not bring an end to civilization as we knew it, as some were prognosticating and maybe a few were hoping, …
