  • Guru: Create A UDTF Wrapper For A Stored Procedure Result Set

    February 4, 2019 Michael Sansoterra

In the tip, Arranging Query Logic in DB2 for i Routines, I addressed a reader’s question about how to create a user-defined table function (UDTF) in DB2 for i that would return the same result set as an existing stored procedure. The purpose of having the UDTF would be to do additional processing on a result set, such as joining the result set with another query or dumping the result set to a temporary table for analysis. To accomplish this, I suggested moving the stored procedure query logic into a UDTF and then replace the query within the stored …

  • Why You Should Join A Local User Group?

    February 4, 2019 Dawn May

Here’s a good question: Why should you want to join a local user group?

You can communicate with colleagues via email or instant messages. A wide array of social networks, such as Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and others, provide a way to share information. Internet searches allow you to find documentation and articles. While the interconnected world provides access to large amounts of information, you also have to determine if the information you find is accurate. Of course, you can trust information from IBM web sites, but what about posts on social media? Are they always right? I’m sure you’ve heard …

  • Taking A Fresche Approach To IBM i-Watson Education

    February 4, 2019 Alex Woodie

There is a big data analytics revolution taking place that threatens to separate the AI haves from the have-nots. Companies that run the IBM i server want to get in on the analytics action just like everybody else, but AI discussions often stray away from IBM i. Now Fresche Solutions is working to close that disconnect with a series of educational courses centered squarely on the intersection of IBM i and Watson.

Last year, Fresche Solutions worked with IBM last year to put together a series of onsite training seminars aimed at giving IBM i professionals the educational tools they …

  • Taking At Stab At Modeling The Power Systems Business

January 28, 2019 Timothy Prickett Morgan

It is incredibly difficult to try to get a handle on how IBM’s overall systems business and then its Power Systems portion of that business is doing, something that I voiced frustration about last summer when talking about Big Blue’s financial results for the second quarter of 2018. At the time, I told you I would take a whack at trying to build a model of Power Systems sales to give us a sense of how the hardware platform is doing, and I took the first stab at this in the wake of IBM announcing its financial results for the …

  • Power Systems Keep Growing To Finish Off 2018

January 28, 2019 Timothy Prickett Morgan

The Power Systems line, buoyed by the deliver of high-end Power E980 systems for big AIX and IBM i jobs, a steady stream of IBM i system upgrades, and some traction in Power-based Linux clusters for HPC and data analytics workloads, turned in a pretty good final quarter for 2018, and capped three prior quarters of growth during 2018 to turn in a full year of growth.

You can’t tell how much growth, of course, but in the lead story of this issue of The Four Hundred, I took my best stab at modeling the quarterly revenue stream of …

  • Guru: Health Indicators

    January 28, 2019 Dawn May

In Configure Collection Services, I reviewed how you can improve the configuration of Collection Services. In this tip, I’m going to demonstrate how to easily review your Collection Services data and understand your partition’s performance characteristics using the Health Indicators.

Navigator for i has a rich set of performance tasks, one of which is Investigate Data, also referred to as the Performance Data Investigator (PDI). The base operating system allows you to manage and visualize Collection Services data. The Performance tasks (and PDI) also support other types of performance data, but those graphical features require installing the Performance Tools …

  • Four Hundred Monitor, January 28

    January 28, 2019 Jenny Thomas

This week we are seeing a lot of news on the cloud and blockchain technologies. It is no coincidence that IBM is firmly rooted in both of these areas, and Big Blue is starting to see rewards from the seeds it has been planting and tending so carefully. While the IBM i doesn’t always weigh prominently in these conversations, good news for IBM is good news for our ecosystem, too. We also got to take a look at IBM’s final earnings report from last year and their expectations for the year ahead. Overall, the future looks bright . . . …

  • IBM i PTF Guide, Volume 21, Number 4

    January 28, 2019 Doug Bidwell

Alright, good people of IBM i Land, here is what is new for the latest edition of the IBM i PTF Guide. There are HIPERs – short for High Impact/Pervasive, meaning you need to pay attention to these – for all three current releases, which means IBM i 7.1 (which is on extended support), IBM i 7.2 (which is still on regular support), and IBM i 7.3 (which is new enough to not care about how old it is yet).

There are also PTFs for the Backup and Recovery group for IBM i 7.2 and IBM i 7.3 releases. …

  • 2019 Predictions: IBM i Trend Spotting

    January 23, 2019 Alex Woodie

What will happen in the IBM i community this year? Maybe IBM will launch a public cloud service? Or IBM i shops will find the budget to get busy with application modernization? It’s really anybody’s guess, which is why IT Jungle solicited predictions from prominent names in the community to get their take on what will happen this year.

The wider IT community is moving quickly to adopt next-gen development methodologies, and those will increasingly find their way into the IBM i community in 2019, predicts Dan Magid, vice president of solution sales with Rocket Software.

    “2019 will bring …

  • Public Cloud Dreaming For IBM i

    January 23, 2019 Alex Woodie

Is the IBM i community suffering from a bad case of cloud envy? While we profess to love our servers, it’s difficult to sit by and watch as our Windows and Linux colleagues tap into unlimited storage and compute resources offered by public cloud vendors. Maybe that will all change in 2019, but it’s not looking likely.

Public cloud vendors have invested hundreds of billions of dollars to build massive data centers around to world to house scads of cheap X86 servers and storage resources. Tens of thousands of companies have moved some or all of their computing stacks into …
