The vendor, which today focuses exclusively on providing solutions that simplify the screens and workflows used by customer service representatives in call centers, says JIS 9.0 provides updated support for the latest host operating systems, Web application servers, and Web browsers.

The new release also brings enhancements to email and calendars, and new features in areas of mobile computing and virtualization support.

  • S4i Updates Document Capture Software

    October 18, 2011 Alex Woodie

IBM i shops that use the latest release of Desktop Capture that S4i Systems announced last week will gain the capability to automatically scan and input more types of documents into their content management systems.

Desktop Capture is a Windows program designed to streamline the acquisition of documents into a content management system (CMS) or document management and workflow system. The software, which S4i Systems unveiled a year ago, can capture documents from a variety of sources, including scanners (for paper-based documents), or e-mail inboxes and file systems (for electronic documents).

Desktop Capture is particularly well-suited to help customers

  • High Liner Ops for Hosted High Availability from DSC

    October 18, 2011 Alex Woodie

High Liner Foods, a Nova Scotia processor of frozen seafood, has tapped Data Storage Corp. (DSC) to protect its data and its applications. The company will utilize two forms of protection, including DSC’s hosted high availability setup as well as a data vaulting solution.

High Liner Foods, which reported revenue of $576 million Canadian ($570 million USD) during its fiscal 2010, is one of North America’s largest seafood processing operations. The company sources finfish and shellfish from all over the world, processes them, and stores them for distribution to restaurants and retail outlets across the U.S. and Canada.

  • Fiserv Touts Magic Gartner Study, Partners with Kronos

    October 18, 2011 Alex Woodie

Gartner has placed Fiserv‘s IBM i-based Signature banking system in the leaders quadrant of its “Magic Quadrant for International Retail Core Banking” report for 2011. Also, Fiserv announced it has partnered with workforce management software provider Kronos to help Signature customers maximize their labor efficiencies.

Gartner’s Magic Quadrants, if you’ve never seen one, rank IT solutions on two axes, including the “completeness of vision” and the “ability to execute.” Those that score well in both categories are placed in the vaunted upper left quadrant of the magical box. Nine other vendors had solutions in the winners quadrant, Fiserv says.

  • RTFM Being Replaced by GTFM

    October 18, 2011 Dan Burger

“Read the freaking manual” (RTFM) is a common response (usually agitated response) to questions that invariably come up in IT settings. Sometimes it’s conversational, but it more frequently occurs in email or instant messaging or a posting on a forum.

But in a conversation I had last week with Bill Hammond, product marketing manager at Vision Solutions, he asked me to imagine a world where sagging shelves overloaded with manuals the size of Tokyo phone books no longer existed. What? No product manuals? You’ve got to be kidding. How will anything get fixed?

It’s all about changing the user

  • I/O, Memory Boosted On Entry, Enterprise Power Systems

October 17, 2011 Timothy Prickett Morgan

I can sum up IBM‘s entry Power Systems announcements on October 12, which are not being formally announced until sometime this week, in a way that will flash you back to either your own or your parents’ childhood. This is the refrain of the theme song from The Power Systems Show: “They’re servers, nearly identical servers: They look alike, they cost alike, at times they even compute alike–you can lose your mind when computers are two of a kind.”

Aren’t you glad I didn’t sing that? Be grateful that I think a newsletter should be printed and not

  • IBM i 7.1 Tweaked To Be More ISV Friendly

October 17, 2011 Timothy Prickett Morgan

As part of the October 12 Power Systems announcements, the IBM i 7.1 operating system-database combo was tweaked with Technology Refresh 3, the second update this year and the third such refresh since IBM moved toward a regular update cycle that was more akin to (but still distinct from) the way AIX gets updated. The Technology Refresh focuses on new functions and I/O support that is meant to be installed with the current operating system release and be less disruptive.

Steve Will, the chief IBM i architect at IBM, explained this Technology Refresh approach to readers of The Four Hundred

  • That Perplexing Power7+ Processor

October 17, 2011 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Like you, I only jump to the wrong conclusion when I come to a cliff and generally only if I believe I am going to make it to the other side. There was a lot of circumstantial and graphical evidence that IBM was going to launch a Power7+ kicker to the current Power7 processor, and as we all found out last week, that didn’t happen. As we report elsewhere in this issue, IBM put out new systems with denser memory and new PCI-Express I/O peripheral slots, but with the same or essentially the same Power7 processor features.

    I hear a
