  • ILE: Decisions, Decisions, Part 1

    June 8, 2011 Susan Gantner

I’ve been working with and teaching people about ILE for many years. There are a few questions that come up again and again. So I thought I’d cover my responses in some tips. In this tip, the subject is binding directories.

I’m often asked about the best way to use binding directories and/or how many binding directories I recommend.

My philosophy is to keep things as simple as possible for the developers. I believe that ILE’s value is in making development more efficient by making it easy to develop and use your own application functions that you can use as

  • Write PDM Scans to Database Files

    June 8, 2011 Ted Holt

Note: The code accompanying this article is available for download here.

My shop licenses a documentation package that tells us all sorts of useful information, such as which programs use which files and which programs call which programs. Nevertheless, we still use PDM string searches to search source code. I wrote a utility that makes such searches more powerful. Maybe you’ll find it beneficial.

    How To Search Using PDM

You have two ways to search source code with PDM. You can use option 25 from the WRKOBJPDM and WRKMBRPDM displays, or you can use the Find String Using PDM

  • Admin Alert: Things I Learned from My Latest Power i Upgrade

    June 8, 2011 Joe Hertvik

Over Memorial Day weekend in the U.S.A., we finished completing two Power i 720 hardware upgrades for a regular client. While the machine installation was relatively easy, I thought it would be helpful to discuss some of the problems, opportunities, and general time wasters that accompanied our migration to the latest Power i hardware, hoping that my experience will help others with their own hardware upgrades.

    Cutting Hardware and Acquisition Costs

Before you buy your machines, make sure you’re not leaving any money on the table. Check if you are eligible for migration assistance from IBM. For many System

    June 7, 2011 Alex Woodie

IBM i and Windows shops that develop with LANSA‘s Visual LANSA environment can now generate client interfaces that deploy to mobile devices, such as the Apple iPad and Android phone. The new capability, which was delivered as an update to the Visual LANSA Framework, is expected to be enthusiastically adopted by LANSA customers that are eager to give their users access to business applications from the latest mobile devices.

As the flagship development environment for LANSA, Visual LANSA has traditionally supported two server platforms, IBM i and Windows, and two types of client user interfaces: Windows-based rich clients and

  • Agilysys to Sell Server and Services Biz, Focus on Software

    June 7, 2011 Alex Woodie

Agilysys will sell its $474-million Technology Solutions Group (TSG) to OnX Enterprise Solutions for $64 million in cash, the companies announced in late May. The move, which immediately preceded a doubling in Agilysys’ stock value, will let the Cleveland, Ohio, company concentrate on its enterprise software products for the retail and hospitality markets. CEO Martin Ellis also resigned.

Agilysys’ TSG unit sold computer hardware and provided professional IT services to companies primarily in the United States, Canada, and the U.K. As a member of the Arrow Electronics distribution channel, TSG resold servers and IT gear from OEMs such as IBM

  • IBM Patches WebSphere Portal XSS Vulnerability

    June 7, 2011 Alex Woodie

Organizations running WebSphere Portal versions 6 and 7 are encouraged to apply an IBM patch to fix a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability that could allow an attacker to run arbitrary HTML and script code in a user’s Web browser. The vulnerability, which was revealed in late May, affects WebSphere Portal 7 running on several operating systems, including IBM i.

According to IBM’s Internet Security Systems‘ X-Force database, which can be accessed at xforce.iss.net/xforce/xfdb/67594, the XSS vulnerability stems from the failure to properly sanitize user input in the search center component of a WebSphere Portal application. This vulnerability could

  • Bytware Releases Japanese Versions of Messaging Products

    June 7, 2011 Alex Woodie

Bytware last week announced that two systems management tools for IBM i, including MessengerPlus and MessengerConsole, are now available in the Japanese language. The new versions were enabled following a development effort to enable double-byte character set (DBCS) support, which is a requirement for displaying Asian languages.

Bytware’s Messenger products are power tools designed to save administrators’ time and increase response time during unforeseen events. They do this by continuously monitoring the IBM i message queues, logs, and journals for critical messages, and automatically responding to certain events by sending alerts to administrators or automatically running scripts.

    MessengerPlus also generates
