  • Sundry IBM Announcements For Power Systems

April 30, 2018 Timothy Prickett Morgan

It is a quiet time in the Power Systems line, with the “ZZ” entry Power9 machines just announced in February and shipping in March and other machines not expected until the third quarter. But there are always some little things happening here and there, and you keep us around so we catch wind of them and report them to you.

First up, in announcement letter 118-036, IBM is offering new processor features and memory sticks for the Power H922 and Power H924 systems that are designed primarily to run the SAP HANA in-memory database on Linux atop Power, but …

  • Guru Odds and Ends: Readers Respond

    April 30, 2018 Ted Holt

I appreciate the comments and feedback that readers have contributed. Some of you sent it my way via the Contact page at IT Jungle. Others emailed me directly. Yet others left comments at the end of the articles themselves. I am always grateful for your knowledge and wisdom, however I receive it.

Knowing that you are very busy and don’t have time to revisit the articles we have published, I’ve collected some of that feedback for your edification. Please feel free to add to the body of knowledge.

  • Multiple Security Vulnerabilities Reported In IBM i

    April 30, 2018 Alex Woodie

IBM this month revealed an array of security vulnerabilities across IBM i middleware components, including OpenSSL, DHCP, and Java products. Most of the flaws were given a “high severity” rating, and all of them have been patched.

This week’s security fun starts with DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), which is used to automate the management and distribution of IP addresses within a network. According to the April 26 IBM security bulletin, IBM i 7.1, 7.2, and 7.3 are vulnerable to a pair of security vulnerabilities in the underlying DHCP protocol.

The first DHCP flaw, which is identified as CVE-2018-5732 …

  • IBM i PTF Guide, Volume 20, Number 16

    April 30, 2018 Doug Bidwell

Yes, we normally put the IBM i PTF Guide in the Wednesday edition of The Four Hundred, but there was some changes in the publication schedule and so we are running the latest edition here on Monday. We will have the follow-on Volume 20, Number 17 in the Wednesday edition this week as normal.

First of all, I made a typo a few weeks back (the current cume on V7R3 is 8025, not 8205), and a few of you caught it. Thank you for the catch, and for letting me know!

Ok, so let’s get started with the meat …

  • Modernize Your Apps, Leapfrog The Competition

    April 23, 2018 Alex Woodie

The IBM i server has a well-deserved reputation for reliability and low cost. It also has a reputation for not being the most agile and cutting-edge platform on the market (which is also well-deserved). However, thanks to innovative modernization techniques, IBM i shops can get the benefits of innovation and perhaps leapfrog competitors who wasted resources buying middling tech along the way.

City Furniture faced this predicament recently. The South Florida chain of furniture stores wanted to extend into the showroom the same type of experience that customers first encountered while perusing the company’s website. The company figured that putting …

  • Git Started With GitHub And ARCAD On IBM i

    April 23, 2018 Ray Bernardi

(Sponsored Content) I have been experimenting with Git as the repository for IBM i native source like RPG, CLP, and so on. Git seems to be the source repository of choice at the moment and using it for native code seems to open up a whole new world to IBM i developers. Imagine being able to branch and merge IBM i code as easily as you do your PHP code. Imagine adopting agile methodologies for native development, builds and deployments. Imagine never having to “check-out” code and jump through those hoops. That’s what Git allows, and it’s really …

  • Guru: Ready or Not! Part 2 of Big Changes in RDi V9.6, Hover and Annotations

    April 23, 2018 Susan Gantner

If you’re one of those RDi users who doesn’t bother updating to the latest releases, listen up. I’ll bet that at least one of the new features in V9.6 will entice you to update. In Ready Or Not, Big Changes in RDi V9.6! Part 1, Key Behavior, I covered some RDi key behavior changes. Here I’ll explore some of the more noticeable — and to me anyway, more useful — features: enhanced hover text and new annotation support.

    Hover Text

RDi has had hover text for variables and procedures for a while now. You could hover over an item …

  • Power Systems Posts Growth In The First Quarter

April 23, 2018 Timothy Prickett Morgan

We have been waiting for four long years for the Power9 ramp to begin in earnest, and the merest hint of it happened Big Blue finished off its first quarter. That was when the “ZZ” Power9 entry systems announced back in February finally started shipping and IBM finally started booking some revenue for this new iron.

IBM did not provide much in the way of information about the Power9 system sales in the first quarter ended in March, which was only a week and a half after the ZZ systems started shipping. Jim Cavanaugh, IBM’s chief financial officer for the …

  • Reader Feedback On Tesla Teases IBM i Software Vendor

    April 23, 2018 Dan Burger

    Hey, Dan:

Sorry for the late reply. I am traveling in Colombia this week and next to work with potential clients. When I do get back, I am more than willing to take you for a ride in the Tesla and show you how the auto pilot, self-parking, etc. works! If you are in Orange County at any point in time, we can arrange it.

I did receive lots of nice feedback on the Tesla video, but not on the blog directly. The blog was published a little after the video was first published. I did get good comments in …

  • IBM Kills iAccess for Windows, Older RDi Versions

    April 18, 2018 Alex Woodie

Spring is still weeks away in the Upper Midwest, where it still feels like winter. But that didn’t stop the IBM i leadership in Rochester, Minnesota from embarking upon some spring cleaning by sending out to pasture some development tooling and admin interfaces for IBM i, including older releases of RDi and all of iAccess for Windows.

IBM yesterday announced that effective April 30, 2019, it will withdraw IBM i Access for Windows. That announcement puts the final nail in the coffin of the old Windows-based client that traces its roots back to OpsNav.

Here’s the short announcement posted to …
