  • Five Strategies For Surviving A Software Audit

    March 5, 2018 Alex Woodie

Dealing with a software licensing audit can be a scary thing, particularly for smaller outfits with limited resources. Martin Thompson of the Campaign for Clear Licensing recently clued IT Jungle into some of the audit strategies that big software companies are employing, and how software customers can be prepared.

Oracle, IBM, Microsoft, and SAP are widely respected for the quality of their software and the responsiveness of their technical support. But they are also feared by customers due to the legal power they hold, the restrictive licensing terms in contracts, and how they use software audits to …

  • Guru: Searching Teraspace

    March 5, 2018 Jon Paris

In my previous tip, Sorting In Teraspace, I looked at how the qsort API can be used to sequence data in ways that SortA can’t begin to approach. Now that the data is sorted, one of the things I may want to do with it is to search it. In this tip I will look at how that can be achieved using the bsearch API. The approach I will be discussing allows for partial key searches and handling the fact that such a search may result in multiple hits.

As you will see when we work through the code, …

  • Advice For the IBM i Application Fence Sitters

    March 5, 2018 Dan Burger

Most executive management does not recognize the importance of IT. They don’t understand it and, therefore, don’t see the potential business advantages that come with restructuring a system that was put in place 10, 20, or even 30 years ago. So, how important is it to influence the perception of IT within organizations?

And how do you get more business managers thinking strategically about IT? One of the keys is to demonstrate how IT is the engine for growth and not a money pit with high risk and little return on investment. There are challenges to overcome, for sure. Don’t …

  • Cognitive Systems Hardware Business Gets A Boost

March 5, 2018 Timothy Prickett Morgan

As 2017 came to an end, X86 server shipments and revenues surged, and IBM’s System z14 mainframes came to market and Big Blue got a much-needed injection of revenues and profits in its Cognitive Systems hardware business.

While IBM did start shipping some initial Power9 iron as the year came to an end, shipments are not going to start in earnest until March, when the “ZZ” entry Power Systems machines announced in February start shipping. In the quarter, and more or less consistent with what IBM said recently in its own financial reports, IDC believes that Big Blue had $2.69 …

  • IT Jungle Readers Respond To Tech Refreshes

    February 28, 2018 Alex Woodie

IBM took some people in the IBM i community by surprise when it unveiled the latest Technology Refreshes for IBM i 7.2 and 7.3 two weeks ago. Support for new Power9 servers obviously headlines the news, but several other notable new features are worth mentioning. We asked IT Jungle readers to chime in on the parts they liked best.

Birgitta Hauser, a developer with Toolmaker Advanced Efficiency in Germany, says she likes the productivity enhancements that TRs bring, and the latest TRs are no different.

“Because I’m at first an IBM i programmer, with the main focus on RPG and …

  • IBM i Server Less Risky for Enterprises, IBM Claims

    February 28, 2018 Alex Woodie

Last year we told you about an IBM-sponsored study that concluded it was much more cost effective to run a mid-size company on IBM i servers than X86 servers running Windows and Linux. It turns out that, at the same time, IBM published a similar comparison for high-end enterprise systems that concluded the IBM i server’s superior uptime saves enterprise users millions of dollars. However, the results should be taken with a grain of salt.

Just like the mid-size server comparison conducted by Quark + Lepton last year, its enterprise study sought to compare how different server platforms would fare …

  • IBM i Database Capabilities Highlight Midrange Dynamics’ Development Activity

    February 28, 2018 Dan Burger

Despite the gravitational pull of a legacy reputation, development on IBM i systems continue to move into new arenas. Shops are modernizing their applications not just to eliminate green-screen displays but to also add features and functionality. Databases are being modernized for the same reasons. And tools that benefit the modernization process are being enhanced.

Change management software (CMS) is in the thick of this. Michael Morgan, managing director of the CMS development company Midrange Dynamics, sees IBM i shops investing in new technologies. He’s doing the same to keep pace with the early adopters and to prepare for …

  • IBM i PTF Guide, Volume 20, Number 8

    February 28, 2018 Doug Bidwell

Breaking News! (This is beginning to feel a little bit like the CNN news scroll.) There are more PTFs for the Spectre and Meltdown (SM) speculative execution security vulnerabilities. As you well know by now, the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities have been classified by IBM’s Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT) as having a “High Severity” level.

The news this week is that there is a new security bulletin for all to read. Here is the link, and we have tried to convey the details in the worksheet in the IBM i PTF Guide.

    The gist of it …

  • Inside IBM’s Power S924 Power9 Entry System

February 26, 2018 Timothy Prickett Morgan

It is hard to say for sure, but the two most popular Power9 machines that IBM will sell in the current and coming years will probably be the single-socket Power S914 or the two-socket Power S924. A lot depends on performance, which we don’t have metrics for yet, but one of these machines is going to be the volume leader – unless they are neck and neck.

We flipped a coin to decide which machine to cover first, and heads was the Power S914 and tails was the Power S924, and the quarter showed the American eagle and not George …
