  • Big Blue’s Software Gurus Rethink Systems

January 30, 2012 Timothy Prickett Morgan

The AS/400 Division and its affiliated Rochester Lab and manufacturing facility has brought some of the key innovations in systems to market ever created by IBM–dense DRAM, magnetoresistive disk heads and dense disk drives, 64-bit PowerPC processor, relational database technology, server virtualization hypervisors, the list goes on–and that made Big Blue a player in the systems market when they were on the cutting edge and that still make it a player today. But the reality of the situation is that Rochester is no longer a center of gravity for systems in the way it was in the past.

  • How Do I Export an iSeries Certificate File?

    January 25, 2012 Hey, Joe

I’m trying to export one of my i5/OS digital certificates into a PC file for server installation. Every time I try the export function, I get the message: An error occurred while opening files to write. What’s going on and how can I export the certificate to a file? I’m running i5/OS V5R4M5.

    –Abe

It could be the way you’re trying to export the file. Here’s how I’ve successfully downloaded digital certificates in the past, and where I’ve hit that particular message. Maybe this technique will help you export your certificate.

    1. Start the IBM Web Administration for i

  • qsort: A Better SORTA

    January 25, 2012 Jon Paris

Over the past few years I’ve done quite a lot of PHP coding alongside my RPG work, and PHP’s extensive use of arrays has furthered my conviction that we RPGers just don’t use arrays nearly enough. There are many reasons for this, of course, one of which is RPG’s limited ability to sort and search arrays.

Admittedly in recent releases the restrictions have been somewhat alleviated, but there are still many limitations. For example, take a look at the DS below:

    d customerData ds Dim(1000) Qualified
    d name 30a
    d address1 40a
    d address2 40a
    d city 30a

  • Limited Capabilities Workaround

    January 25, 2012 Patrick Botz

Limited capabilities is a widely used security function of IBM i. User profiles have an attribute named limited capabilities or LMTCPB. CL commands have an attribute named allow limited capabilities users or ALWLMTUSR). CL commands set to ALWLMTUSR(*NO) cannot be run from a command line by user profiles set to LMTCPB(*YES). To be more precise, these commands cannot be run from a command line, the command-entry display, FTP, REXEC, the QCAPCMD API, or as an option from a command grouping menu.

This is all well and good. Sometimes, however, you run into situations where a few user profiles, that should

  • T.L. Ashford Ships New Forms Overlay

    January 24, 2012 Alex Woodie

T.L. Ashford & Associates last week unveiled a new overlay utility for Barcode400, its IBM i forms and barcode labeling software. The new utility is much easier to use and will make Barcode400 users more productive, the company says.

Barcode400 is an electronic forms and labeling package that supports the generation of all types of barcodes and radio frequency identification (RFID)-encoded tags, including compliance labels. The software outputs labels in Printer Control Language (PCL) and AFP

  • RJS Lashes WebDocs to WebForms

    January 24, 2012 Alex Woodie

RJS Software Systems, which has been on a product integration kick of late, last week announced that a new release of its Windows-based WebDocs document management and routing software can now be used directly with WebForms, its online forms offering, resulting in heightened usability.

Prior to the release of WebDocs–Windows Edition version 1.4, RJS customers who were also running WebForms had no obvious, out-of-the-box way to hook the two products together. This was unfortunate for RJS customers, as the two products offer complementary capabilities in the area of capturing data from people via online forms (WebForms) and managing and

  • IPS Acquires OnePrint Software from LogNet

    January 24, 2012 Alex Woodie

Integrated Print Solutions of Texas has acquired all the rights to OnePrint, a print protocol converter that it’s distributed for the last 14 years, from its former business partner LogNet Systems of Israel.

OnePrint is a Windows-based print protocol converter that enables customers to print documents from IBM i and mainframe servers on standard, inexpensive printers, and eliminates the need for customers to purchase or maintain expensive AFP and IPDS printers from IBM.

The software works by converting the high-end AFP and IPDS output from IBM servers into standard printer data streams–including Printer Control Language (PCL) and PostScript, as well

  • iSam Blue Adds Storage Director to its Lineup

    January 24, 2012 Dan Burger

iSam Blue, a data protection company specializing in the backup and recovery field, has added a virtual backup storage solution to its repertoire of products and services. The addition is a result of partnership with Tributary Systems makers of Storage Director, a virtual tape library software product that consolidates tape libraries and accelerates backups in multi-server, multi-platform environments.

Robert Seal, CEO at iSam Blue, says he first heard about Storage Director at the COMMON 2011 Annual Meeting and Exposition.

“I realized that this is a backup solution that many IBM i users need,” Seal said in a telephone interview
