  • Attunity Unveils New Data Replication Suite

    October 4, 2011 Alex Woodie

Attunity last week unveiled new data replication software that supports most major databases, including DB2/400, DB2 for LUW and z/OS, SQL Server, Oracle‘s database, and NonStop SQL/MP. Called Attunity Replicate, the new software is designed to support an array of data replication tasks, and features a Web-based console that’s intended to simplify setup and management.

Attunity developed its new replication software to fit a variety of customer demands, especially as they pertain to moving data to and from Web-based (or “cloud”) sources. The company touts the product’s scalability, as well as its adaptability to handle different replication tasks.

  • Vision Updates Database Replication Solution

    October 4, 2011 Alex Woodie

Vision Solutions yesterday unveiled Double-Take Share 5.0, a new version of the database replication that previously was known as Vision Replicate1. The release brings enhancements in the area of SQL Server support, enhanced flat file support, and expanded support for data types.

It has been some time since we’ve seen an enhancement to Double-Take Share, a database replication tool that supports all major databases, including DB2/400, DB2 LUW, DB2 for z/OS, IBM’s Informix, Oracle‘s eponymous database, Sybase ASE, and Teradata‘s database. Before Vision changed the name of the product to Double-Take Share following the completion of its $242

  • Mobile Malware Set to Explode, Security Pros Say

    October 4, 2011 Alex Woodie

You knew it was just a matter of time before cyber criminals began targeting smart phones–not just writing the occasional bit of malware, but really targeting mobile platforms with purpose. That time has now arrived, according to IBM‘s X-Force security organization, which issued a new report last week that warned of the coming explosion of security problems in mobile devices.

The number of mobile exploits observed in the wild is on pace to double this year compared to 2010 numbers, X-Force says in its 2011 Mid-Year Trend and Risk Report released last week. At the beginning of 2010, malware

  • Crossroads Shrinks its SPHiNX VTL, Adds SAS Support

    October 4, 2011 Alex Woodie

Crossroads Systems yesterday unveiled a new release of its SPHiNX data protection solution that should help both large and small customers. Smaller shops will benefit from a smaller, less expensive version of the virtual tape library (VTL) appliance, while larger vendors will appreciate the expansion of the largest VTL device to 35 TB of native storage. Support for SAS disk connectivity will be useful for connecting to the latest Power Systems environment.

Crossroads’ SPHiNX is a line of disk-based backup devices that protect data on IBM i, Windows, and Linux servers, as well as PCs. The offering functions as a

  • Seagull Delivers Major New Release of LegaSuite

    October 4, 2011 Alex Woodie

IBM i shops and ISVs that rely on Seagull‘s LegaSuite software to extend and modernize their 5250 applications will see a host of new capabilities in version 6, which the Rocket Software subsidiary announced last week. The new version introduces new reporting, testing and workflow modules; extensive integration with the Eclipse development environment; change management improvements; and a faster new runtime engine. RPG Open Access, which initially was on the drawing board for version 6, was dropped by Seagull due to lackluster customer demand.

LegaSuite version 6 includes a number of new features that had been requested by existing

  • Continued U.S. Investments In IT Pay Off

    October 3, 2011 Dan Burger

If you have noticed that short-term business planning and financial performance is replacing long-term value creation, then you might well have some concerns when the topic of U.S. competitiveness in the global markets is debated. Pocketing short-term profits while manipulating earnings and blaming a lack of investments on the wobbly economy has been known to happen within individual companies. You might even know some examples in the IBM i community. However, entire industry segments, such as the information technology sector, seem to be built for the long haul–at least that’s true in nations interested in revving their economic engines with

  • IBM’s Market Value Passes Microsoft After 15 Years

October 3, 2011 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Well, it only took a decade and a half, but as far as Wall Street is concerned, IBM is now as valuable as Microsoft.

On late Friday, as I was putting together this newsletter, IBM’s stock was hovering around $178 a share, giving Big Blue a market capitalization of $212 billion. That’s a little bit off from the $185.63 high that IBM set back on July 22, but with Microsoft’s shares falling (for a variety of reasons), IBM has pulled slightly ahead of Big Bill at the Thursday close. Microsoft had recovered a little to a $215 billion valuation

  • Top 10 Ways to Reduce IT CapEx and OpEx Costs

    October 3, 2011 Jenny Thomas

“Without reducing headcount” would be the best way for that headline to end. And although the analysts at Gartner, who just released a report with this cost cutting action list, don’t come right out and say that, most of us would associate reducing costs with the possibility of rolling heads.

But keep your chin up, because most of the 10 actions that Gartner has identified for reducing IT infrastructure and operations (I&O) expenses by 10 percent in 12 months, and as much as 25 percent in three years have nothing to do with personnel. (Why did Gartner have to

  • IBM Invests Nearly $4 Billion In Next-Gen Chip Tech

October 3, 2011 Timothy Prickett Morgan

It looks like IBM is going to stay in the chip manufacturing business for at least a few more years, which is good news for Power Systems-IBM i shops.

New York governor Andrew Cuomo announced last week that it was kicking in $400 million into various high-tech campuses of the State University of New York (SUNY) relating to the development of future chip technologies while at the same time IBM agreed to pump $3.6 billion into its chip research facilities in Yorktown Heights, New York, and in its chip manufacturing facilities in nearby East Fishkill. Cuomo also announced that a

  • Reader Feedback on New Systems and QuickTransit Emulator

October 3, 2011 Timothy Prickett Morgan

    Timothy:

Thumbs up on the lead-off article Start Planning For New Systems Now. Thorough but useful at every turn, practical rather than a tech spew of speeds and feeds, and a great bit of tactical advice regarding negotiation on a Power7 in light of the upcoming Power7+.

Just wanted to let you know I enjoyed it and will be referencing it where relevant in some LinkedIn groups I participate in.

That’s why you keep me around. Glad to be of use.
