  • As I See It: Virtual Pheromones

    October 7, 2013 Victor Rozek

Helen Morrison was a single woman with an age-old dilemma. Entering midlife, she wondered if she would ever meet a suitable partner and, frankly, she was getting lonely. But although Morrison longed to be married, she had no acceptable way of meeting men socially. Respectable women did not frequent taverns, nor were desirable partners likely to be found loitering over pints at the nightly watering hole.

But Morrison found what would become a visionary solution to her quandary: She placed a personal ad in her local paper, the Manchester Weekly Journal. Her “Lonely Hearts” ad was the first of

  • As I See It: All Things Big

    March 25, 2013 Victor Rozek

Many years ago, 60 Minutes did a segment on the Israeli Air Force. At the time, the United States had just sold the Israelis a handful of our latest jet fighters and 60 Minutes wanted to see how Israeli pilots were using their new toys. Turns out they had made a number of low-tech modifications (some classified), which the Israelis believed would make the planes more user friendly. For one thing, they installed an inexpensive rear-view mirror so that the pilot could track enemy aircraft without turning his head. The reporter also asked about the vast array of gauges, flashing

  • Boomi Grows Cloud Integration Under Dell

    February 19, 2013 Alex Woodie

When Dell acquired Boomi just over two years ago, the B2B integration firm was just starting to ramp up its cloud integration service. Today, Dell says its cloud business executes more than 1 million integration processes every day, which led a company executive to declare “the end of middleware as we know it.”

Boomi was an early participant in cloud-based integration business when it launched Boomi On-Demand back in 2007. The software as a service (SaaS) business model was just getting off the ground, and Boomi wanted to be there to help customers integrate their on-premise applications and data,

  • IBM’s Social Media Addiction Intensifies

    February 4, 2013 Dan Burger

When it comes to eating its own dog food, IBM can’t get enough of social media. Everyone at the Big Blue enterprise is expected to chow down. In turning social media into social business, Big Blue figures it is best to lead by example. Last week, IBM’s social technology soapbox Connect 2013, the conference formerly known as Lotusphere, was talking with their mouths full. Naturally, this was a good time to announce new software and cloud-based services. Warning: Buzz shields required beyond this point.

The statistical bombardment is the first thing that hits you.

IBM claims 61 percent of the

  • Liaison Grows Its Cloud with Acquisition of HubSpan

    September 4, 2012 Alex Woodie

Liaison Technologies, a developer of security and data integration software that runs on IBM i and other platforms, has acquired Hubspan, a provider of a cloud-based business process management (BPM) integration platform.

You can think of HubSpan’s cloud, called the WebSpan SaaS Integration Platform, as an EDI translator on steroids. The hosted application does the grunt work of executing, choreographing, validating, and monitoring the flow of data and business documents among multiple parties. But WebSpan goes beyond traditional EDI translation or even newer FTP-based AS2 messaging to support the vast array of technologies and techniques used to integrate
