  • Four Hundred Monitor, April 15

    April 15, 2019 Jenny Thomas

If you are an IBM employee thinking of leaving your job, IBM probably knew about it before you did. Big Blue has been using AI as an employee retention tool and can predict with 95 percent accuracy which employees are likely to leave, CEO Ginni Rometty said in a recent interview. A little scary in the wrong hands, but if used effectively could mean a happier, more satisfied workforce, and cost savings in seeking and training new employees. You can see Rometty’s whole interview at the first link below, and then continue on to catch up on the rest of …

“You see golf. We see data.” I probably won’t be watching, but golf fans know the Masters kicks off this week in Georgia, and tech fans will be interested in seeing how IBM’s Watson keeps the tournament running smoothly. Of course, I wish I could tell you the IBM i was prominently featured, but it is always good to see IBM getting in front of 13 million television viewers, if the 2019 Masters lives up to last year’s numbers. You can see IBM’s slick website for the Masters at the first link below, and continue on from there for the …

It was nice to see some of our IBM i community getting into the April 1 spirit this week, even if it did make the job of finding news of the week tricky for me. I almost fell for Profound Logic’s “rebrand” into Profound Logistics, and I enjoyed seeing the iTech Solutions new superhero work uniforms. There was some real news this week as well, which we have gathered and summarized for you in true Four Hundred Monitor fashion. Read on to find out what’s up in the IT world, and don’t forget to check the calendar for upcoming webinars …

I think we’re all pretty tired of being lectured about security. I mean, there can’t be anyone left who doesn’t understand the importance of protecting data from all of the virtual predators who are out to steal and exploit it. And yet, week after week, the news headlines continue to be dominated by security breaches, sometimes perpetrated by hackers and sometimes by stupidity. This week we take a look at just a few of the recent security headlines in our top stories, but we leave it to you to make sure you’re doing everything you can to protect your data …

Did you know today, March 20, is considered the first day of spring? At least in the Northern Hemisphere it is. Also known as the spring equinox, today the length of the day is nearly equal in all parts of the world. While those of us on the Northern side of the globe start to enjoy longer, sunnier days, we can all enjoy the latest news from in and around our IBM i ecosystem. Be sure to check out our calendar at the bottom section for travel opportunities – a trip to COMMON in Southern California sounds like a great …

This week, our own ITJ editor extraordinaire Alex Woodie takes on the omnipresent dinosaur perception that, even with so much new and exciting tech happening, the IBM i just can’t shake. It all began with a story about the city of San Francisco and the tax property assessment tool it run on “a Cobol-based system called AS-400.” That quote might make you cringe, but Alex points out “the problem isn’t so much the platform, but the applications that run on it.” You can find the links to both articles below and have your own debate, as well as find links …

“Dear March, come in!” Readers of Emily Dickinson might recognize the first line of one of her many poems. Although it is unlikely she was thinking of the computing industry as she welcomed the new month, the sentiment is fitting as we already enter the last month of the first quarter of the year. 2019 has been a busy one for IBM as it continues to make headlines throughout the computing world, which will hopefully result in good numbers coming out of Q1. You can count on IT Jungle to be watching for that news, and in the meantime, you …

I’m sure you’ve been the recipient of a backward compliment (or maybe even inadvertently given one before). The IBM i has definitely had its share of unintentional insults, as recently as our top story below where our beloved platform was dubbed “likely the safest and most powerful server platform you’ve never heard of.” Awkward for those of us already in the know, but the intention here was good and we’ll definitely take the props where we can get them. In fact, IBM had a lot of good news to share this week, which we have wrangled and condensed for you …
