  • Time Is Running Out To Take The IBM i Marketplace Survey

October 25, 2023 Timothy Prickett Morgan

By now, you are no doubt getting a little tired of us asking you to take the annual IBM i Marketplace Survey. It is beginning to sound a little bit too much like NPR and PBS during pledge drives. And for that, we truly apologize. But, we do want to have as many of you take the survey so we get the best sense of what is happening in the IBM i base that we can get.

The results of this survey are an invaluable resource for the IBM i community. This is particularly true since IDC, Gartner, Forrester, …

  • So You Wanna Take Another IBM i Survey, Right?

October 23, 2023 Timothy Prickett Morgan

It is hard to believe that it has been a decade since the IBM i Marketplace Survey was conceived of by the late Dan Burger of IT Jungle and Tom Huntington of HelpSystems, now known as Fortra.

As you might imagine, we miss Dan every day, and we are committed to the mission that he had to better understand what is going on in the IBM i base. Time is running out for you to participate and have your voice heard and your IBM i shop is counted. Please take a moment and take the survey, which you can do …

  • Realizing The Promise Of Cross Platform Development With VS Code

    January 25, 2023 Jeff Tickner

An integrated development environment is like a tractor or a truck, or indeed any other kind of tool. There are farmers who want a tractor from John Deere or Ford or Massey-Ferguson, contractors who want a Ford or Dodge or GMC truck, and carpenters and electricians who use Dewalt or Milwaukee Electric or Makita cordless tools.

No matter the choice of tools, ultimately these blue collar workers are going to farm and build things, and the choice of tool should not interfere with that effort. White collar – or far more likely no collar T shirt – programmers are no …

  • Transferring Low Code Benefits Into The IBM i

    September 22, 2021 Eugene King

As with fashion, there are trends in the IT industry and history tends to repeat itself in several exciting ways.  Development languages come into fashion, run their course, and then become obsolete. Then, they may be revamped with the addition of new criteria and frameworks. IBM i development also follows these same trends.

The low-code movement is not new but another iteration on traditional programming. Let’s do a brief history review.

At first, computer programming involved specific machine code associated with a particular processor architecture.  Eventually, the language was slightly abstracted to facilitate second-generation assembler code, which was partially portable …

  • Fifty Years Of Operating IBM Systems

    March 11, 2019 Bill Hansen

The world is celebrating some important 50th anniversaries this year. My interests in aerospace and music led me to recall four events from 1969. The most famous event was the first manned moon landing in July, which occurred the same week that I turned 21. Two months before that was the first flight of the Concorde supersonic transport. I mark the beginning of the “summer of love” with the Woodstock concert, and its end with the tragic concert at Altamont Speedway. (Who knew that Hell’s Angels would not make great security guards?)

For me, all of this pales in comparison …
