  • IBM i PTF Guide, Volume 22, Number 27

    July 14, 2020 Doug Bidwell

Welcome to the second half of 2020 after a brief holiday hiatus from The Four Hundred and therefore the IBM i PTF Guide.

There is another new HIPER for the Virtual I/O Server, or VIOS, which again we know all of you IBM i shops love dearly. The HIPER is IJ25390, and it is for slow TCP performance with the Virtual Ethernet adapter and large send. Here is some more on that LSO – short for large send offload – and specifically a link that explains it better than we did two weeks ago, plus another link to a …

Well, we made it through half of 2020, and that is something of a miracle. Let’s hope the second half is not so dramatic. The odds are not favoring that at the moment, but hope springs eternal and that is how we have made it through the past 15,000 years of pre-history to today, if you think about it. It’s helpful to take the long view at critical times.

As far as PTFs go, there is a new HIPER for the Virtual I/O Server, or VIOS, which we know all you IBM i shops love. The HIPER is IJ25390, and …

We hope that everyone in the United States had a Happy Thanksgiving, and we are still “playing ketchup” on the PTF leftovers before that holiday, which gets us into the final stretch of 2019, rolled around. Ketchup is good on turkey, but cranberry sauce is better.

Just a reminder to everyone: IBM i 7.2 will reach end of support on April 30, 2021. That may seem like a long time from now, but you will be surprised at how fast it comes up. IBM did not say very much in its end of support announcement, which you can see here …

Welcome to this week’s issue of the IBM i PTF Guide where we have a bunch of stuff to review, including a new Backup and Recovery Group for IBM i 7.4. Among other news are HIPERs for IBM i 7.4, 7.3, 7.2, and 7.1, and there is a new HTTP server group for IBM i 7.4, 7.3, and 7.2.

In addition, we also have a set of Security Bulletins that cover multiple vulnerabilities in the IBM i HTTP Server affect IBM i, as follows:

    IBM i 7.4	IBM i 7.3	IBM i 7.2
    CVE-2019-9517	SI70961 SI70970 Not affected
    CVE-2019-10081	SI70961

We were busy at IBM Systems Technology University in Las Vegas last week and also had to chew through the Technology Refreshes for IBM i 7.3 and IBM i 7.4, so we are not our normal chatty selves here at the IBM i PTF Guide. Please do forgive.

So what’s new, you ask? There are new HIPER groups on all four releases. Yes, even IBM i 7.1, with MF66663, which deals with hard disk issues. That’s enough excitement for one week, really.

New (or Updated) Links this week: None this week, busily gleaning useful tidbits from TechU calls material! …

Good people of IBM i Land, in this latest edition of the IBM i PTF Guide you will see that there are new HIPERs and Security groups for all four of the operating system releases. If you are on V7R1, please read the HIPER cover letter – there are over 100 fixes that are not on the cume and lots of dependencies. Please read and heed! And note that the PTFs for vulnerabilities below are not in this new Security group!

There is a new DB2 for IBM i group for version 7.2, and a new version of MGTools …

It has been a busy week out there in the PTF generation factory at IBM, with a new cume for IBM i 7.2 (following a week after the new cume for IBM i 7.3) as well as a new HIPER Group and a new Web Query Group for all three current releases (that’s IBM i 7.1, 7.2, and 7.3).

In this week’s issue, there are a few new or updated links in the Guide, as follows:

    • LDAP — IBM Directory Server for IBM i (LDAP)
    • SMTP — Configuring SSL Between IBM i and Remote Mail Router WITHOUT Authentication

    And …

IBM i 7.4 won’t be here until the AS/400’s 31st birthday on June 21.

So brace yourself. HIPERs, Backup and Recovery, and QMGTOOLS are all new this week, and there is this little gem of a security bulletin: Vulnerabilities CVE-2018-5407 and CVE-2018-0734 in OpenSSL affect IBM i. That second one is elegant but deadly!

The link for this fix can be found here, and the fixes are here:

    • Release 7.2/7.3 – SI68727
    • Release 7.1 – SI68726

And don’t forget about this security bulletin: Vulnerabilities CVE-2019-5739 and CVE-2019-5737 in Node.js that affects IBM i. The link for this vulnerability is here, and this affects IBM i 7.3, 7.2, and 7.1. For Node.jsv6, SI69165 …

Right off the bat, there are new High Impact and Pervasive (HIPER) PTFs for IBM i 7.1, IBM 7.2., and IBM i 7.3, which are the three currently support releases of the operating system. (Well, IBM i 7.1 is on extended support, not full support, so that is like having 2.5 or 2.75 releases, depending on how you want to do that math.) So, by all means, get hyper about HIPERs and get a-moving.

As far as new links in the accompanying sheet for the IBM i PTF Guide goes, there was nothing of note this week. But check back …
