  • IBM i Integration Elevates Operational Query and Analytics

    May 16, 2022 Bill Langston

Modernization, SQL, RPG, open source, cybersecurity, resilience, compliance, clouds, and AI are the trending topics in enterprise technology. As a result, IT professionals can easily overlook and undervalue software that enables real-time, operational query and analytics.

In contrast, managers and mid-level staff in accounting, logistics, inventory, sales, customer service, and other departments still place a high value on data access and often wish their IT team could do more to help. Collaboration is the key, because your company isn’t realizing the potential of operational query and analytics if you have narrowly defined it as a dashboard and ad hoc file …

  • Keeping Up With Open Source Security Updates

    May 26, 2021 Alex Woodie

Open source is a source of technological innovation on IBM i, in multiple respects. But it also opens the platform up to additional security vulnerabilities. That’s why it’s important to stay on top of security patches, for the core operating system as well as the open source technologies that are helping to transform it.

IBM does a good job of keeping up with security vulnerabilities are found in the operating system as well as the multitude of open source technologies that are included with it. In the last five weeks, IBM has issued several security bulletins for core open source …

  • Bring Docker To IBM i

    November 15, 2017 Dan Burger

One of the fundamental shifts in the way people think about building applications is the use of containers, packages that include: code, runtime, system tools, system libraries, and settings. Containerized software runs equally well regardless of the environment. Docker is the most popular of the container platform providers. And there is a group of IBM i advocates who would like to see Docker support added to IBM i.

One of those supporters is Kim Greene, a Domino on IBM i consultant, with clients who would benefit from Docker support. Specifically, Greene sees an opportunity for supporting Verse on Premises (VOP) …

  • Firm Brokers MuleSoft’s Passage Into IBM i World

    August 16, 2017 Alex Woodie

Open source is not the best model for everything in the computing world. But you’d be hard-pressed to find a better use for open source than data and application integration, which are notoriously messy, expensive, and brittle. Which is why, if you’re not familiar with MuleSoft, you likely will be in the future.

MuleSoft got its start over 10 years ago when Ross Mason decided to start developing an open integration platform. Mason thought: Why should developers toil to build custom-coded integrations over and over again when it could be built correctly one time and then shared with the world? …

  • Open Source On IBM i: Let It Grow

    May 15, 2017 Dan Burger

The evaluation of open source software is nowhere near conclusive when it comes to enterprise grade application development. Decisions remain in the exploratory phases. Roadmaps are incomplete. Most are without clear routes to a destination. Some are without destinations. However, it would be wrong to assume roads are not being built.

There is no way that the future of application development – on IBM i or anywhere else – can handle everything that is coming down the pike without open source. That’s not a mandate to jump on a band wagon. It’s an awareness wake-up call. The IBM i community …

  • Top 11 Ways to Protect Your IBM i from Insider Threats

    February 22, 2017 Alex Woodie

Hackers get a lot of attention when it comes to cyber security, and for good reason: external cyber threats are growing in volume and sophistication. But one shouldn’t overlook the harm that insiders can—and do—wreak on companies on a daily basis. Security expert Carol Woodbury recently shared 11 ways IBM i pros can protect the server from the very real threat posed by insiders.

Woodbury, who is the vice president of global security services at HelpSystems and formerly was IBM‘s chief security architect for the AS/400, says IBM i shops unknowingly leave themselves open to internal attacks through a …

  • IBM i TRs Bring New Open Source Data Transfer Tools

    February 22, 2017 Alex Woodie

IBM i shops that adopt the latest Technology Refreshes from IBM will find a trio of new open source tools for moving data and objects across various data transfer protocols used on the Internet. The addition of Wget, cURL, and rsync to the IBM i Open Source solutions package will give IBM i shops more choices for moving data.

As IBM added open source development tools like Python, PHP, and Node.js to the platform, it has triggered requests for additional tools that open source developers are familiar with, says Alison Butterill, the offering manager for IBM i in Rochester, Minnesota. …
