  • IBM i PTF Guide, Volume 22, Number 9

    March 2, 2020 Doug Bidwell

There is rarely a week that there isn’t something going on with PTF patches for the IBM i operating system, its integrated database, and the whole stack of software wrapping around that operating system. This would be one of those normal weeks, where there is nothing too crazy going on but there is stuff to pay attention to.

We also had a leap year Saturday for the IBM i PTF Guide, which doesn’t happen very often. The Gregorian calendar has a 400-year – well, 146,097-day – cycle, and of these days, there are 97 days that correspond to February …

Another day, another dollar. Another week, another batch of PTF patches for the IBM i stack.

So here is what has gone down. There are multiple vulnerabilities in the IBM Java SDK and the IBM Java Runtime that affect the IBM i platform. Fixes for the vulnerabilities are contained in current Java PTF group for all four releases. IBM recommends that all users running unsupported versions of affected products upgrade to supported and fixed versions of affected products.

Here is the rundown of the patches this week, by release.

    PTF Groups 7.4:

    • HIPERs (High Impact/Pervasive)
    • SAP Support Required PTF List

Hello once again from the IBM i PTF Guide. We hope that your 2020 is off to a great start, and that you are keeping up to date with your PTFs on your particular release of the IBM i platform. Big Blue is still releasing patches for IBM i 7.1, and even though it will be withdrawing sales and marketing for IBM i 7.2 on April 30 of this year, it will be patching this release of the operating system and database for quite some time to come, as we talked about in The Four Hundred back in June …

We are rolling along and singing a PTF song here as January is ramping up and everyone working on IBM i is getting back to work after the holidays.

First of all, the new J-Resave for 7.3 has been tested on a slip of the LIC, which we have been talking about for the past month, and it works! So this is very good news for customers who have created logical partitions without the Hardware Management Console (HMC). The default SST profiles Expired Passwords after PTF upgrade – see this link: https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/1127871. And here is the rest of the …

As you well know, there is an issue with LPARs that are hanging on machines that have the latest Technology Refreshes applied to IBM i 7.3 and IBM i 7.4 in cases where the Hardware Management Console (HMC) is not managing the partitions. The details of the issue with the Technology Refreshes are outlined in APAR MA48101, and what it means is that a guest partition created with Virtual Partition Manager (VPM) inside SST or Integrated Virtualization Manager (IVM) will hang on IPL after the apply of the TRs. This gets real elaborate, so we strongly suggest you review …

We want to remind you once again about the LPARs that are hanging on machines that have the latest Technology Refreshes applied to IBM i 7.3 and IBM i 7.4 in cases where the Hardware Management Console (HMC) is not managing the partitions. The details of the issue with the Technology Refreshes are outlined in APAR MA48101, which is essentially a bug report that warns customers of an issue with the software stack and oftentimes gives hints about when and how it will be fixed.

Here is the issue in a nutshell: IPL-SRCC6003962-WAIT Hang with IBM i 7.3 with …

The PTFs keep rolling even through the holidays, so this is our time to get caught up with the last two weeks of patches in 2019 as the new year is beginning.

In PTF Number 51, we dug a little deeper into the issue we found out about just as The Four Hundred was going on hiatus where LPARs are hanging on machines that have the latest Technology Refreshes applied to IBM i 7.3 and IBM i 7.4 in cases where the Hardware Management Console (HMC) is not managing the partitions.

The details of the issue with the Technology Refreshes …

Listen up, folks. This one is serious. A few weeks ago, there were some bad patches on the Db2 for i database for IBM i 7.3, as we detailed here, and as last week was coming to a close, we found out that LPARs are hanging on machines that have the latest Technology Refreshes applied to IBM i 7.3 and IBM i 7.4 in cases where the Hardware Management Console (HMC) is not managing the partitions.

Alright everybody, listen up. Right off the bat, there are temporary storage PTFs – and two for IBM i 7.4. These have been added to the IBM i PTF Guide underneath each of the releases, so check it out.

Also there is a new Security Bulletin that relates to multiple vulnerabilities in Python that affect IBM i 7.4, 7.3, and 7.2. See this link for details and remediation. Moreover, there is a new HIPER group for IBM i 7.4, 7.3, and 7.2, and there are also new Security groups for all of these supported releases, too.
