  • IBM Offers Deep Discounts On Power-Linux Down Under

April 13, 2015 Timothy Prickett Morgan

IBM wants to sell a lot of Power8 iron running the Linux operating system Down Under, and it wants to do it fast. Like before the end of the second quarter, which comes to a close in June. To that end, IBM New Zealand and IBM Australia have kicked out some pretty steeply discounted iron that is sure to get the attention of prospective buyers–maybe even those who might otherwise opt for Linux on X86 machinery.

Under the deal announced in Australia last week in announcement letter ZA2Z5260A, IBM is giving discounts on eight different configurations of the Power S812L, Power S822L, and Power S824L machines, configured with varying numbers of processors cores, memory, and 15K RPM disk drives. Here are the feeds and speeds on the deal:

The discounts on the deals start out at 50 percent for the smaller configurations, hit 52 percent for configuration number three, 53 percent for number four and start sliding back from there. System 5 in the table about has a 47 percent discount, system six has a 39 percent discount, system seven has a 42 percent discount, and system 8 comes in with a 35 percent discount. These figures are all in Australia dollars, obviously. And it is important to note that these machines, which technically are able to support IBM i and AIX and run the PowerVM hypervisor, neither IBM i not AIX is supported on Power 8 machines with an L designation in their name. Linux operating systems are not included with this pricing, and the deal expires on June 30.

A similar deal is available to customers in New Zealand and is detailed in announcement letter ZA2Z5262A. The prices are in NZ dollars in that deal, and it looks like the discounts are a bit steeper, too.

The wonder is what is making IBM so eager to sell Power-Linux machines down in Australia and New Zealand, and why such deals are not available in Europe and North America. If the deal is there, then it should be here.

Get More Out of Your IBM i

With soaring costs, operational data is more critical than ever. IBM shops need faster, easier ways to distribute IBM applications-based data to users more efficiently, no matter where they are.

    The Problem:

For Users, IBM Data Can Be Difficult to Get To

IBM Applications generate reports as spooled files, originally designed to be printed. Often those reports are packed together with so much data it makes them difficult to read. Add to that hardcopy is a pain to distribute. User-friendly formats like Excel and PDF are better, offering sorting, searching, and easy portability but getting IBM reports into these formats can be tricky without the right tools.

    The Solution:

IBM i Reports can easily be converted to easy to read and share formats like Excel and PDF and Delivered by Email

Converting IBM i, iSeries, and AS400 reports into Excel and PDF is now a lot easier with SpoolFlex software by DRV Tech.  If you or your users are still doing this manually, think how much time is wasted dragging and reformatting to make a report readable. How much time would be saved if they were automatically formatted correctly and delivered to one or multiple recipients.

SpoolFlex converts spooled files to Excel and PDF, automatically emailing them, and saving copies to network shared folders. SpoolFlex converts complex reports to Excel, removing unwanted headers, splitting large reports out for individual recipients, and delivering to users whether they are at the office or working from home.

Watch our 2-minute video and see DRV’s powerful SpoolFlex software can solve your file conversion challenges.
