  • Ohio Hospital Taps Imprivata for SSO Solution

    March 3, 2009 Alex Woodie

Fairfield Medical Center, a 222-bed hospital in central Ohio, has deployed the OneSign single sign-on (SSO) solution from Imprivata to help it address the difficulty that doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers had logging onto various computer systems, including McKesson applications and the AS/400, Imprivata announced last month.

Prior to the implementation of OneSign SSO, Fairfield Medical Center workers had to remember six to eight different passwords to access critical applications used daily, including McKesson, the AS/400, the Fuji Picture Archiving Communications System (PACS), Healthcare Management Systems‘ Clinical View, and the hospital’s own physicians’ portal.

Not surprisingly, the workers struggled to remember all those passwords, and this resulted in numerous calls to the hospital’s IT help desk for lost passwords and password resets. This sapped the productivity of the healthcare workers, and took attention away from their primary job, which is the health and well-being of hospital patients.

The hospital looked for solutions, and settled on Imprivata OneSign, an appliance-based SSO offering that allows users to reset forgotten passwords–without requiring the assistance of the help desk.

Following the deployment of OneSign, calls to Fairfield’s help desk dropped by 50 percent, according to Imprivata. “Internally, the Imprivata OneSign solution practically sold itself. Once our employees tried it, they fully embraced it and encouraged their colleagues to sign-up,” said Sky Gettys, the hospital’s CFO. “Moreover, OneSign had little impact on existing user workflow and behavior.”

Imprivata, which is based in Lexington, Massachusetts, has more than 700 customers, including a number of AS/400 shops, according to its published case studies. For more information about the company, visit www.imprivata.com.
