Bytware i5 Security Campaign Gaining World Recognition

Published: November 13, 2007

by Alex Woodie

Bytware's i5 virus mystery campaign launched in October is now at full throttle, according to officials with the i5/OS security software company. The campaign, which is being organized as a scavenger hunt, has attracted the attention of thousands of people in dozens of countries, and is helping to raise awareness of the possible security exposures of running PHP on the System i.

About four weeks ago, Bytware launched a new marketing campaign and scavenger hunt revolving around a story about a fictional financial services company whose System i server was compromised by a team of Chinese hackers. As part of the game, people visit certain Web sites to find answers to questions on PHP and i5/OS security, and they'll ultimately be asked to solve the mystery of the identity of the hackers. When the event ends in about a month, Bytware will award the winners of the hunt several prizes, including an Apple iPod, a Nintendo Wii game console, and iTunes gift cards.

According to Chris Jones, Bytware's marketing director, the company has recorded more than 5,000 page views at the campaign's main Web site, www.i5virus.com, and nearly 700 views of the video posted on YouTube. People from 36 countries are participating in the event, he says. "The game is going quite well," he says. "Word is really getting around and it is turning out to be a very successful promotion."
