May 21, 2013 Alex Woodie
Linoma Software just increased the potential marketplace for its GoAnywhere software as the result of being awarded a General Services Administration (GSA) Schedule 70 contract, which streamlines the purchase of the managed file transfer (MFT) software by federal, state, and local governments.
The folks at Linoma had been working on the GSA Schedule 70 contract for some time. Attaining such a contract involves a fairly comprehensive investigation of the vendor and its products, and can take up to a year. Just the same, the process went through quickly for Linoma, says Dirk Zwart, director of technology alliances for Linoma.

May 21, 2013 Alex Woodie
It didn’t take any fancy big-data analysis to show that Tableau Software had a very good day Friday, when its stock price soared 63 percent from its opening price. The company, which makes data visualization tools, enjoyed another 11 percent gain in early trading yesterday, giving it a market capitalization of around $365 million.
Tableau is a small player in the overall market for business intelligence software, but it’s garnering lots of attention–especially after the successful IPO. The 10-Year Security Itch Needs Scratching
May 20, 2013 Alex Woodie
In 2004, PowerTech unveiled its first report on the state of security for the iSeries server, as the IBM i platform was then called. The report uncovered major problems at iSeries shops involving passwords, remote access, and user profiles. Fast forward to April 2013 and PowerTech’s 10th annual report, which uncovered systemic problems with–you guessed it–passwords, remote access, and powerful user profiles.
If you think back to 2004, computer security issues were just beginning to grab headlines. Microsoft was under daily threat from hackers seeking to expose vulnerabilities in its products, which it would patch every month on “Patch Tuesday.”

May 14, 2013 Alex Woodie
Vision Solutions last week unveiled MIMIX DR, a new disaster recovery (DR) product designed to help eliminate data loss and speed the recovery of systems and applications following a disaster at smaller IBM i sites. MIMIX DR uses the same data and object replication capabilities that are found in the full MIMIX high availability (HA) offering. But MIMIX DR lacks the automated failover capabilities of MIMIX HA, and instead uses a manual failover process.
Just like the full MIMIX HA product, MIMIX DR uses IBM remote journaling (RJ) technology to replicate all changes made to DB2/400 data and IBM i

May 14, 2013 Alex Woodie

While regular banks take big exciting risks in search of big exciting profits, the not-for-profit credit unions seek the repeatable and the predictable. So when Core Network Processing (CNP) tapped Worknet to take over hosting and management of its core, IBM i-based application, it made its decision carefully, since it would effect nearly a fourth of the country’s 8,000 credit unions.
CNP is a limited liability corporation (LLC) that was set up years ago by US Central to provide core, back-office data processing for a group
