  • Quantum Launches ‘Pay As You Grow’ Dedupe Boxes

    February 5, 2013 Alex Woodie

Quantum last week launched the DXi6800, a new deduplication appliance designed to allow customers to start small and gradually grow their investment over time.

The new DXi6800 scales from 13 TB to 156 TB of storage, which Quantum says gives the device three times the scalability of comparable products from Data Domain, the market leader in data de-duplication.

Quantum also claims that its DXi6800 line, which uses 3 TB drives that are self-encrypting, consumes half the power and data center floor space as the Data Domain boxes. For example, a DXi6802 equipped with 3 PB of storage capacity requires just 14U of rackspace, the company says.

The DXi6800 supports NAS, OST, and VTL interfaces, and can emulate VTL and LTO tape drives. Host connections are provided through up to six 8 Gbps Fibre Channel interfaces, up to four 10 GbE Optical (SFP+) or Copper, and up to seven 1 GbE ports. The Quantum appliances support device-to-device replication, as well as in-line deduplication and hybrid deduplication methods, where a backup DXi-series device helps the primary device with the deduplication workload.

Quantum’s partner, Tributary Systems, sells a storage gateway appliance called ECLIPSE that allows Quantum’s DXi-series appliances to be used in Power Systems environments, including IBM i. Pricing starts at $110,000 MSRP for a base unit with 13 TB usable storage. For more information, see www.quantum.com and www.tributary.com.
