  • Kisco Bolsters WebReport with New PDF, Distribution Features

    June 5, 2012 Alex Woodie

Kisco Information Systems last week unveiled a new release of WebReport/i, its report distribution tool for the IBM i server. In addition to a new name (it was previously called WebReport/400), version 12 of the product sports the capability to include editable fields in generated PDF forms, as well as new HTTPS and FTP capabilities.

WebReport/i allows IBM i shops to make more effective use of the spool files and reports generated by their applications. The software can automatically convert IBM i spool files to PDF, HTML, TIF, RTF, XLS, or CSV formats, and then distribute them via email, fax, FTP, or the Web. Two versions of WebReport/i are available, including the PDF version that supports conversion of DDS spool files, AFPDS overlays, IPDS graphics, and DBCS spool files to PDF, and another, less-expensive version that doesn’t support PDF.

With version 12, the PDF version (called WebReport/i PDF) gains a handy new capability to add an unlimited number of editable fields, or fill-in boxes, to the generated PDF form. This enables the recipient of a PDF to enter data with the comfort and precision of a PC and a keyboard, as opposed to printing the form out and manually writing the information down in the box. People with messy or illegible handwriting, such as 99 percent of the medical doctors in this country, will find the new feature very useful.

WebReport/i version 12 also features enhancements to the new Report Intranet feature that debuted with version 11.05 last August. The Report Intranet, which uses the built-in Apache server in IBM i and IBM i user access control features, brings new configuration options for setting up secure HTTPS for report distribution.

Other enhancements include the capability to automatically transmit spool files stored in the IFS via FTP; the capability to distribute reports in TIF; a new SMTP trace feature that makes it easy to diagnose email distribution problems; and the capability to lock down output queues.

WebReport/i PDF retails for $1,995 per partition. The non-PDF version is about $800 cheaper. For more information, see www.kisco.com.
