    Help/Systems last week announced it formed a partnership with Dynamic Solutions International that will see DSI selling Help/Systems backup software for IBM i into its installed base.

    DSI is an Englewood, Colorado-based company that sells a range of storage solutions, including disk-based VTLs; LTO tape drives, autoloaders, and libraries; and storage management software. The company has close to 40 years of experience and counts about 2,000 organizations as customers.

  • BCD Brings Mobile App Goodness to WebSmart PHP Edition

    Business Computer Design Int’l. last week unveiled the latest version of its flagship Web application development and runtime environment for IBM i servers. A big part of the WebSmart 10 launch is WebSmart Mobile PHP, a new component that combines server-side PHP code generation with new Mobile jQuery templates to speed the creation of Web-based mobile apps on IBM i. The company also took a big step toward object-oriented PHP development.

  • LANSA Takes Mobile Apps Offline

    Mobile applications are proving themselves to be useful tools for businesses. But they often don’t work when disconnected from the server running the ERP systems and databases. IBM i development tool maker LANSA is addressing this shortcoming with a new release of its LongRange mobile application framework that allows RPG- or COBOL-based mobile apps to continue working even when the user is outside of cell or WiFi coverage.

    LongRange is a mobile application framework designed to give IBM i shops the capability to deliver mobile interfaces to existing IBM i resources without learning HTML5, CSS3, PHP, JavaScript, Java, or Objective-C.

  • Venyu Hooks Up with CMA for Cloud Backup

    Venyu, a cloud backup and recovery provider, and IBM business partner and midrange server reseller CMA Technology Solutions last week announced the formation of a partnership aimed at providing cloud backup and recovery solutions for IBM i shops.

    Venyu provides cloud-based backup, disaster recovery, and cloud hosting services to more than 1,200 customers, primarily those in the Southeast and Gulf Coast region. The company operates several data centers across the country, including one at its headquarters in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and others in Massachusetts and Missouri.

  • HiT Supports SAP HANA with Data Replication Tool

    The growth of big data systems is driving big demand these days for HiT Software, the BackOffice Associates subsidiary that has made a living making database access products. Last month, HiT bolstered its data replication tool, DBMoto, with the capability to move data into SAP HANA.

    SAP designed its HANA database to house and run operational and analytic workloads at the same time.   • Coda on IBM i Beats Out PeopleSoft Upgrade

    When it came time for a financial system upgrade, DecoPac, the world’s largest provider of cake decorations, selected UNIT4‘s Coda package running on IBM i over an upgrade of Oracle‘s PeopleSoft, the software vendor announced last week.

    DecoPac is an Anoka, Minnesota-based company that markets and distributes a range of cake, cookie, and cupcake decoration products to professional bakeries around the world. For decades, the company has developed its own IBM i software to handle sales and distribution.

  • Austrian Manufacturer Demonstrates IT Simplicity with IBM i

    The Austrian eyewear company Silhouette International Schmied AG has made a name for itself by manufacturing eyeglasses with simple designs, advanced materials, and superior technology. That ethos extends to Silhouette’s IT environment, which runs on IBM Power Systems servers and requires a minimum of manual intervention.

    Arnold and Anneliese Schmied founded Silhouette in 1964 with the idea of making eyeglasses high-tech fashion accessories. The company is best known for elegantly simple and extremely thin eyeglasses that use super lightweight materials, such as titanium, which was instrumental in NASA selecting Silhouette sunglasses as standard gear for American astronauts.

  • New Zealand TV Company Taps Zentive for ICOMS Monitoring

    Sky Television, New Zealand’s only pay-television provider, has adopted the 360Service Assurance product from Zentive to help it monitor its IBM i-based ICOMS customer care and billing system.

    According to UK-based Zentive, Sky Television needed a way to monitor and ensure the availability of API interfaces to its ICOMS platform. The company found Zentive’s 360Service Assurance and its Overseer for API Gateway Availability add-on to fit the bill.

  • ASTI Records UDO Win in County Court’s Office

    The Sangamon County Circuit Clerk’s office recently implemented a UDO optical media storage solution from Alliance Storage Technologies (ASTI) to store court records that it manages for the Seventh Judicial Court located in Springfield, Illinois, the company announced last week.

  • SMBs Lack Cohesive Digital Strategy, IBM Says

    If you thought that bigger companies have a leg up on their smaller cohorts when it comes to having a cohesive digital strategy, you’d be right, according to a new survey from IBM.

    IBM says its global study of midmarket C-Suite leaders uncovers a “surprising” fact about most small and midsize companies: “They may not be as digitally savvy as they’d like.”
