  • BOSaNOVA Taps Leostream for Virtualization Partnership

    February 17, 2009 Alex Woodie

System i shops using BOSaNOVA‘s terminal emulators will soon find another piece of software residing in the package: the Connection Broker from Leostream. The OEM deal announced by the companies last week is intended to make it easier for BOSaNOVA customers to manage their virtual desktop infrastructures, or VDIs.

BOSaNOVA kicked off its VDI initiative less than a year ago after rolling out its first round of virtualized thin clients. By preloading Citrix Systems‘ XenDesktop virtualization software on its Windows and Linux thin clients, BOSaNOVA hoped to help streamline the provisioning and management of thin client infrastructures,

  • DB2 Web Query Goes Multiplatform

    February 10, 2009 Alex Woodie

Information Builders and IBM announced last week that they are collaborating to build an adapter that allows the DB2 Web Query for i business intelligence product to process data from non-DB2/400 databases. The first database adapter, expected later this year from Info Builders, will target SQL Server, with more database adapters expected in the future.

To that end, enterprise-level customers of GroundWork Open Source‘s new GroundWork Monitor version 5.3 release, unveiled today, will gain a 50 percent performance boost compared to previous versions. • InstallAnywhere 2009 Looks to Smooth Java App Installs

    February 10, 2009 Alex Woodie

Software installations are notoriously fickle. Incompatible runtimes, missing drivers, non-existent libraries, and other common situations conspire to reject new programs on a fairly regular basis, causing time and productivity loss for the customer and a backlash against the software developer. Acresso, the software startup that owns the InstallShield franchise, last week unveiled a new release of the multiplatform version of the product, called InstallAnywhere 2009, that aims to thwart installation imps, particularly in Java environments.

Acresso was formed on April 1, 2008, following the acquisition of the business software unit of Macrovision by Thoma Cressey Bravo, the private

  • New Address Correction Software from WorksRight is Suite

    February 10, 2009 Alex Woodie

You’ve probably seen it before: Somebody forgets to mark your company’s correct suite number on a letter or package, but it makes it to you anyway. Usually, this is the result of an astute postal carrier who knows his route like the back of his hand. But other pieces of mail may not be so lucky. Now, AS/400 shops can ensure their mail has the correct suite number by utilizing WorksRight Software‘s mailing software, which was recently enhanced with the U.S. Postal Service’s SuiteLink technology.

The USPS estimates that nearly 1.8 billion pieces of mail are annually sent to

  • System i: The New Choice of a Fashion-Conscious Generation

    February 10, 2009 Alex Woodie

The System i might not be widely regarded as fashionable. After all, other business computer platforms look a lot better in a tux than the old black box. But based on the experience of Elie Tahari, the System i is an excellent choice for fashion-conscious clothing designers–especially those that value good decision making and lean supply chains.

Elie Tahari is a designer of upscale clothing that can be found in Sak’s Fifth Avenue. It also operates its own chain of stores in some of the fashion world’s hottest locales, including New York, Miami, Las Vegas, and Milan.

    February 10, 2009 Alex Woodie

Software developers who are wondering how they’re going to incorporate encryption into their service oriented architectures (SOAs) may want to check out SafeNet.
