  • Hitachi Predicts 4 TB Disk Drives by 2011

October 22, 2007 Timothy Prickett Morgan

The clever engineers at the former IBM disk drive business that is now known as Hitachi Global Storage Technologies are pushing the technology barriers again, and said last week they have shrunk the read/write heads on a prototype disk drive enough that the company is predicting it can ship 4 TB disk drives by 2011 for the desktop market, and presumably for the server market soon thereafter.

To boost the recording density of its disk designs, Hitachi’s San Jose Research Center in California and Central Research Laboratory in Japan figured out a way to reduce the size of the disk

  • Oracle Planning Reorganization in Application Group?

October 22, 2007 Timothy Prickett Morgan

The IT trade press is a-buzz about an impending reorganization at Oracle application group that may, in the wake of the company’s unsolicited $6.7 billion bid for middleware software maker BEA Systems two weeks ago, portend even bigger changes coming at the software giant.

Although reports in the Wall Street Journal last week said sources had confirmed the actions by Oracle, the rumors have not been confirmed by Oracle. Apparently, John Wookey, who is the senior vice president in charge of application development at Oracle, is going to leave the company. Wookey came to Oracle in 1995 from ERP software

  • Controlling System i Shutdown Activities Using An Intelligent Power-Handling Program, Part II

    October 17, 2007 Brian Kelly

Enabling a Power-Handling Program To Control System Activity During a Power Interruption

    Elle,

When the UPSDLYTIM‘s automatic shutdown does not serve your installation needs, it is nice to know that there is a better way–an intelligent power handling program. When the unexpected arrives as it often does unexpectedly, a more controllable and granular approach to a system shutdown can save the day or at least save your system so it will run tomorrow. The power-handling program that IBM

  • Converting LF to CRLF in IFS Files

    October 17, 2007 Hey, Ted

I had a situation where I wanted to change the end-of-line character from linefeed to carriage-return/linefeed to make a JavaScript file on the Integrated File System more readable in Notepad. I stumbled upon EDIT FILE (EDTF), F15, option 5. Then, after a little searching, I found your articles. Talk about reinventing the wheel! I was surprised that changing end-of-line characters was not part of the CHANGE ATTRIBUTE (CHGATR) command (or some other command). Is there any chance you could share a Qshell solution that converts LF to CRLF? I love using Qshell when I can, but

  • Reader Feedback: More on Vendor Names and Changing System Names

    October 17, 2007 Joe Hertvik

This week, let’s took a look at a few emails that I received concerning some of my recent Admin Alert columns. These emails contain more information on how to retrieve system information for vendors and the relationship between changing your i5/OS system name and iSeries Access for Windows PC5250 connections.

Regarding my article, “What Vendors Want to Know (and How to Get It)” that described different ways to retrieve system information, Elvis Budimlic of Centerfield Technology had this to add:

We’ve faced this issue as well. Our solution was to create a command for customer download that provides all

  • CYBRA Teams with Solzon to Develop i5/OS RFID Software

    October 16, 2007 Alex Woodie

IBM doesn’t think i5/OS is an appropriate platform on which to develop a radio frequency identification (RFID) application, but that doesn’t mean there is no demand for such an application. In fact, CYBRA and Solzon, by their account the only two software companies developing RFID software that runs under i5/OS, announced earlier this month that they are joining forces, and combining their respective strengths in i5/OS product development and real-world implementation to give System i customers the strongest option for native RFID deployment.

CYBRA and Solzon have been partners for the last two-and-a-half years, during which time Solzon has

  • ProData’s Remote Database Access Tool Gains Automation

    October 16, 2007 Dan Burger

There are several ways to access remote databases from the System i. They range from complex and expensive to simple and inexpensive. One of the least expensive and easiest to use methods has been developed by ProData Computer Services. Its Database Utility (DBU) is used by thousands of System i shops to access relational database systems, and earlier this year DBU Remote Database plug-in (DBU RDB) opened up cross-platform database access. This week ProData is releasing Remote Database Connect (RDB Connect), a new access avenue for RPG, COBOL, and CL programs.

The difference between RDB Connect and DBU Remote

  • Real Vision Software Delivers RVI 8.0

    October 16, 2007 Alex Woodie

Real Vision Software is now shipping a major new release of Real Vision Imaging (RVI), its document scanning and content management solution for OS/400 and i5/OS users. With version 8.0, Real Vision has made a number of enhancements, including more indexing options, better scanner support, enhancements to the Web interface and HATS support, more mark-up capabilities, new “system linking” capabilities, and other new features.

RVI is an image capture and retrieval system designed to help iSeries and System i users reduce their dependence on paper-based processes. The software enables users to capture and index documents from various sources, including i5/OS

  • Vision Tackles i5/OS Application Performance with Director 7.0

    October 16, 2007 Alex Woodie

Vision Solutions is best known as a provider of high availability software for the System i server. After all, since it has purchased three of its former competitors, Vision pretty much now owns that market. But thanks to its acquisition of OS Solutions two-and-a-half years ago, the company is also designing and marketing i5/OS performance management tools, and last week it shipped a major new release of its key offering in that arena: Vision Director 7.0.

Vision Director, which evolved from OS Solutions’ old OS Director product, is a systems optimization and performance utility that’s geared toward freeing up DASD,

  • BOSaNOVA Joins PCI Security Group

    October 16, 2007 Alex Woodie

BOSaNOVA, a provider of thin client and security solutions for System i shops, has joined the PCI Security Vendor Alliance, an industry group devoted to helping members understand and comply with the new Payment Card Industry (PCI) data security standards, the company announced last week.

PCI has become one of the most feared (and respected) data security regulations enacted over the past couple of years. Unlike Sarbanes-Oxley, which has vague requirements for IT and affects only public companies, PCI introduced very specific minimum requirements that all parties to credit card transactions–including merchants, software makers, and device manufacturers–must meet
