  • IBM Licenses Power8 Chips To Chinese Startup

January 27, 2014 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Ahead of its reporting of disappointing system sales last week and the announcement that it was selling off its X86 server business to Lenovo, IBM also announced a new partnership in China that will see a startup funded by a provincial government and other industrial players make its own variants of the Power processors for servers.

The startup, called Suzhou PowerCore, is a sister company to an existing Power chip licensee called China Core, or C*Core for short. The companies share the same CEO, Jiang Zheng, but they will operate separately. Suzhou PowerCore has joined IBM’s OpenPower Consortium and

  • Cognitive Computing Is Knocking On The Door

    January 27, 2014 Dan Burger

Powerful cognitive computer systems are on the doorstep. You have to decide whether or not to let them in. These are computers modeled on the human brain, so there’s the possibility they will come in whether you invite them or not.

Sorry for the Fright Night introduction. This isn’t a Stanley Kubrick Space Odyssey. It’s IBM‘s annual innovation thriller titled Five in Five. If you’ve not heard of it before, it’s a made for media prediction of what will come to pass during the next five-year span. But before we get to that, let me introduce the star

  • OCEAN User Group Milestone: 25 Years of Educational Endurance

    January 27, 2014 Dan Burger

There ought to be a degree program, a certification, or a lifetime achievement award for user group members. This form of continuing education is undervalued. Maybe it’s because there’s no graduation and no diploma to hang on the wall. But if you think of all the knowledge gained and the professional contacts made, the value proposition looks pretty good. The IT business is an exciting, fast-paced profession. Ask anyone who has been associated with the OCEAN user group for all or even a part of its 25-year run. It’s been a continuing education experience, a valuable lesson in collaboration, and

  • CIOs To Feel The Pinch Again In 2014

January 27, 2014 Timothy Prickett Morgan

If a new poll done by Gartner is any measure, it looks like chief information officers and their IT departments are going to feel the pressure to do more with less or the same in 2014.

Gartner had just finished up a survey of 2,339 CIOs from all around the globe as 2013 was coming to a close, and the results of the survey are problem familiar to all of you living in the IT trenches. The aggregate budget of the CIOs, who came from 77 different countries, represented more than $300 billion in IT spending, which is about a

  • Profound UI Handles Long-Name Aliases for RPG Coders

    January 21, 2014 Alex Woodie

There are several reasons why RPG is viewed as a washed-up old legacy language to most of the non-IBM i world. IBM got rid of one of them when it widened its use of free format specs with IBM i 7.1 TR7. And Profound Logic is helping to dispel another with the latest release of its Web app development tool, Profound UI, which will help wean RPG coders away from cryptic, 10-character field names and toward descriptive aliases.

To an outsider, trying to decipher the 10-character field names used in RPG can be exercise in futility. Without some kind of

  • Raz-Lee Certifies IBM i Security Tools with McAfee

    January 21, 2014 Alex Woodie

Organizations that run IBM i security software from Raz-Lee Security can now feel comfortable hooking that software up to enterprise security tools from McAfee as a result of the certification that McAfee has bestowed upon the Raz-Lee products. The integration allows IBM i shops running Raz-Lee tools to bubble suspicious events detected on IBM i up to the security information and event management (SIEM) tools from McAfee for broader and more thorough security protection.

The certification ensures that Raz-Lee’s iSecurity suite can communicate accurately with two products from McAfee, including its Database Activity Monitoring (DAM) and Enterprise Security Manager (ESM),

  • m-Power Takes IBM i Mobile Apps Offline

    January 21, 2014 Alex Woodie

IBM i shops that develop with mrc‘s technology can generate HTML5-powered mobile apps that continue to work even without an Internet connection. The new capability was delivered this month with an update to m-Power, mrc’s Web application development tool.

Despite the proliferation of 4G cell networks and Wi-Fi hot spots, there is the occasional dead spot on this vast North American continent. A person’s ability to live-tweet his mid-morning coffee break–let alone place a sales call or check the order status for an important customer–is severely hampered in such a place.

As the adoption of mobile business apps increases,
