  • There’s No “i” In French Open Tennis

    June 10, 2013 Jenny Thomas

IBM has been providing technology to the French Open since 1985. As you might imagine, a lot has changed in the last 28 years. At one time, back in the early 2000s, the AS/400 and then the iSeries played a role, but these days the tennis data is served on a private power cloud.

The French Open, which just wrapped up on Sunday, has been known to draw up to 100 times normal traffic to the tournament Web site at www.rolandgarros.com. With that kind of a visitor surge, it is easy to see why IBM’s SmartCloud services are

  • When Is A Source Member Not A Source Member?

    June 5, 2013 Susan Gantner

I do my coding using Rational Developer for Power Systems (a.k.a. RDP). Most of the time, I open the source code in the editor in RDP much like SEU users would, in the sense that I open my source directly from a member in a source file in a library on IBM i. When I save from the RDP editor, the source is saved back to that same member.

Below is a picture of what my screen looks like when I’m working with RDP as described above. Note the highlighted library, source files, and members in the “Remote Systems” view

  • Conditional SQL I/O

    June 5, 2013 Ted Holt

If an RPG programmer has a best friend, it may very well be the CHAIN opcode, which performs a random read on a keyed database file. It’s common programming practice in information-processing shops to read one file sequentially and to chain to read a host of others randomly. SQL handles this sort of thing differently. With SQL, joining is the proper way to retrieve data from two or more tables and/or views. The difference is even more pronounced when some of the random processing may or may not take place.

Suppose you’re responsible for a database that contains customer orders.

  • Admin Alert: Renewing A Default *System Certificate

    June 5, 2013 Joe Hertvik

In an earlier column, I described how to solve problems when loading digital certificates into your IBM i Digital Certificate Manager (DCM). This week, I’ll review another DCM problem where the default certificate in the system certificate store (*SYSTEM) expires, and the system starts refusing connections from clients that use digital certificates. This week, let’s examine what happens when a *SYSTEM default certificate expires and how to renew that certificate in DCM.

    Getting The Terminology Correct

To untangle what’s happening here, let’s first look at some terminology regarding your partition’s DCM.

A system certificate store, designated by *SYSTEM in DCM,

  • Profound Reveals Native Mobile App Option

    June 4, 2013 Dan Burger

Profound Logic has developed ways for IBM midrange companies to create mobile applications using its designer tool and deploying to the Web and through hybrid applications (not quite native) via PhoneGap. This week it is adding another option with native apps for Apple and Android smartphones and tablets. Native application capability is the quickest and easiest way to deploy mobile apps and those are two huge priorities for a lot of companies.

Two months ago, Profound was espousing the open source framework that the software vendor incorporated into Profound UI 4.5. Now it’s the native application enhancements that have

  • Esker Fax Cloud Boosts Service Levels for Distributor

    June 4, 2013 Alex Woodie

Fax may seem like an anachronism in today’s hyper-connected world, but it’s absolutely critical in some industrial pockets. For Edward Don & Company, the nation’s largest food service company, fax is used to send and receive hundreds of orders and invoices every day. But when Edward Don’s previous fax service provider couldn’t keep its fax machines on, the company looked to Esker and its Cloud Fax Service for SAP.

Edward Don & Company is the country’s largest food service company, with 1,200 employees and more than 70,000 customers. The Woodridge, Illinois-based company makes 12,000 products available to its customers

  • ASNA Refines Its Mobile Tooling with Sharper Icons

    June 4, 2013 Alex Woodie

Delivering a smooth user experience is critical when rolling out new mobile interfaces for applications that run on IBM i, or any other platform for that matter. But this can be a challenge for the typical IBM i shop accustomed to command line interfaces and keyboard-based navigation. ASNA hopes to make the user interface creation process easier with two new releases of its mobile application development tools, including Mobile RPG 6.1 and Wings 6.1.

That ASNA has two tools for creating interfaces and applications for mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) is an interesting story. The San Antonio, Texas, company initially

  • Bug Busters Strengthens Object Comparison in HA Software

    June 4, 2013 Alex Woodie

One of the bugaboos with high availability (HA) environments is keeping objects in sync. If objects on a backup machine aren’t kept up with those on the primary system, a failover may not go as planned, or the organization may just feel that it’s too risky to attempt. Bug Busters Software Engineering has addressed this concern with a new feature in RSF-HA version 9.2 that compares objects, libraries, and IFS directories on the primary and backup servers while the primary system is still online and in use.

Because data and object sync checks are so important, every HA software product

  • Inexika Reveals Prototype of Notes Mail App for iOS

    June 4, 2013 Alex Woodie

Inexika is working on a new mobile app that will allow users to access the IBM Notes-Domino database from an Android or iOS phone. The app, which has a working title iWorkplace, is in the prototype phase, and will deliver functionality that IBM provides with its Traveler software, but without Traveler’s limitations.

When it’s available, iWorkplace is expected to provide mobile access to several Notes modules, including Notes email, contacts, calendar, and tasks, as well as the discussion and team room collaborative functions.

You may notice that these are some of the same capabilities that IBM provides with Lotus Notes
