  • ECS Sales And Profit Bump Can’t Offset Components Slump At Arrow

August 27, 2012 Timothy Prickett Morgan

With the economy slowing down in Europe and China, it is not an easy time in either the electronic components or IT systems business, as the most recent financial results from Arrow Electronics show.

In the second quarter ended in June, Arrow’s revenues dropped 7 percent, to $5.15 billion, and even with lower cost of sales and other expenses, net income for the company fell 26.8 percent to $114.4 million. Arrow simply needs a higher volume of business to make its numbers, but to be fair, if it did not have $13.3 million in restructuring charges in the quarter, the

  • Vallee To Retire From Avnet As Revenues And Profits Weaken

August 27, 2012 Timothy Prickett Morgan

In his 35 years at master reseller Avnet, Roy Vallee has spent 13 of them as chief executive officer and 14 of them as chairman, and he has seen many ups and downs in the systems and components rackets. And Vallee also knows that Avnet can roll with the punches and will do so after he retires from the company.

Avnet has been working on a succession plan for a number of years, tapping Rick Hamada last July to be CEO and a few weeks ago tapping board member William Schumann, executive vice president at FMC Technologies, to

  • The Ethernet Switch Market Is Booming

August 27, 2012 Timothy Prickett Morgan

The server market has stalled a little bit as Intel, Advanced Micro Devices, IBM, Oracle, and Fujitsu are in various stages of processor transitions. But the Ethernet switch market is going gangbusters as companies begin the transition to from Gigabit to 10 Gigabit Ethernet switching in the data center.

According to the box counters at IDC, the worldwide market for Layer 2 and 3 switching gear that adheres to the Ethernet protocol accounted for $5.52 billion in revenues, an increase of 8.5 percent year-over-year across all Ethernet port speeds. At Layers 3 through 7 in

  • Composing An XML Document From Relational Data: Part 2

    August 22, 2012 Michael Sansoterra

In Part 1 of this series, I covered how to transform the results of a DB2 for i7.1 query into either an element- or attribute-based XML document. This time, I’m going to delve into a more complicated XML composition that requires the nesting of sales order XML elements as children of retail store elements. As with the last tip, I’ll start with a base SQL statement that extracts the required data and then gradually transform that statement until it produces the desired XML document using the new DB2 for i XML functionality.

To start, here is the base query that

  • Where’s The Module?

    August 22, 2012 Susan Gantner

Note: The code accompanying this article is available for download here.

Over the years I have participated in many discussions about how to find all the programs that have a specific module bound into them. Since the DSPPGM command doesn’t support output to a file, it provides a challenge to find this information. The question always seems odd to me, because my philosophy is that if the code in a module is needed in more than one program, it goes into a service program. The service program is then referenced by (and shared by) all the programs that need

  • Admin Alert: Copying User Profiles Between Systems

    August 22, 2012 Joe Hertvik

There are times when IBM i administrators may need to copy a user profile from one IBM i system to another, especially when promoting software from a development to a production system. This week, I’ll illustrate three different techniques for copying profiles between systems and talk about their strengths and weaknesses.

Three Ways To Copy User Profiles Between Systems

There are three different ways that I know of to copy a user profile between IBM i operating systems. These techniques are ranked here in terms of the most difficult way to the easiest way to copy a user profile.

  • Dos and Don’ts of DR with Richard D

    August 14, 2012 Alex Woodie

Richard Dolewski, a disaster recovery (DR) expert with Velocity Technology Services, has seen things in the DR world that will make you cringe, such as the Fortune 500 company without a DR plan or recoverable systems. With extreme weather events on the rise and companies’ appetites for downtime on the decline, now is a great time to re-evaluate your strategy for keeping your IBM i apps running during a disaster. Dolewski recently shared some dos and don’ts on the topic with IT Jungle.

  • IBM Delivers Tech Preview of New Java-Based 5250 Emulator

    August 14, 2012 Alex Woodie

In mid-July, IBM made available for download the technology preview of IBM i Access Client Solutions, a new Java-based version of the IBM i Access emulator that can run on Mac, Linux, and Windows. The new offering addresses two difficulties faced by IBM: keeping users of its Windows-based i Access current, and offering an emulator for non-Windows devices.

IBM first announced IBM i Access Client Solutions in April as part of its IBM i 7.1 Technology Refresh 4 (TR) release. The big news in TR4 was Live Partition Mobility (LPM), a must-have feature for the new cloud world. But
