  • RJS Expands Connectivity Options for Digital Signature Software

    May 1, 2012 Alex Woodie

RJS Software Systems last week unveiled a new release of SignHere, a piece of software that applies captured signatures to digital documents. SignHere version 1.3.3 brings several enhancements, including integration with the signature capture components of VeriFone point of sale (POS) devices, one-click integration to Microsoft Word and Excel, and “print-to-sign” capability from any Windows application.

RJS introduced SignHere a year-and-a-half ago to streamline the flow of digital documents, speed up the approval process, and minimize wasteful printing. When an invoice, bill of lading, or other document in digital form requires a signature, the user can use SignHere to apply

  • mrc Posts a ‘Timeline Template’ on mPower App Exchange

    May 1, 2012 Alex Woodie

mrc recently unveiled a template that allows users of its mPower Web app dev tool to quickly create timeline applications. The Timeline Template allows users to view events across a scrollable timeline, and was posted to the Project Exchange, a free online app exchange for mPower users.

The new Timeline Template makes it easy to implement a Web-based timeline of events. The template allows users to use their mouse wheel or cursor to scroll forward and backward through the timeline. When an event piques their interest, they can click on it, and a window pops up that contains detailed information

  • Island Pacific Completes ERP Upgrade for Clothing Retailer

    May 1, 2012 Alex Woodie

Island Pacific last week announced that it has successfully completed an upgrade of its IBM i-based Merchandising Suite for Aéropostale, which sells clothing to teenage girls and boys through nearly 900 stores.

The Irvine, California-based software vendor said it upgraded Aéropostale’s implementation of its Merchandising Suite (formerly IPMS) from Release 1.5 to Release 3.2. The upgrade involved several Merchandising Suite modules in use by Aéropostale, including Sales Audit, Finance, and Deals and Promotions.

This was a “major upgrade” that brought several new capabilities, Island Pacific said. For example, Aéropostale gains better encryption for customer-related data, which is a big concern

  • IBM i 7.1 Tech Refresh Sports Live Partition Mobility

April 30, 2012 Timothy Prickett Morgan

As The Four Hundred told you months ago, IBM was indeed working on a Technology Refresh update for its IBM i operating system for the spring and this update does indeed include live partition mobility, bringing the IBM i platform up to the same level of logical partition live migration that AIX and Linux on Power have had for years. The Tech Refresh also includes a number of other enhancements to the integrated DB2 for i database, a repackaging of the DB2 Web Query tool, and a number of other tweaks and changes.

The Technology Refresh mechanism that Big

  • IBM Peddles Discounted, Linux-Only Power Iron

April 30, 2012 Timothy Prickett Morgan

IBM is getting nervous about the price disparity between Power and X86 servers again and wants to expand the total addressable market for its Power machinery. And to those ends, Big Blue has gussied up some Power machines in tuxedos to match their Penguin-powered operating system. These new PowerLinux machines have lower hardware prices than the same iron when configured to run either IBM i or AIX and, says IBM, can meet or beat two-socket X86 servers running Linux.

The one thing the two new PowerLinux machines cannot do–their firmware forbids it, according to Scott Handy, vice president of PowerLinux

  • The ‘New’ Infor Keeps Commitment To IBM i Customers

    April 30, 2012 Alex Woodie

As the largest provider of IBM i-based ERP applications, Infor is a critical component of the midrange community. Now that Lawson has been integrated into the company, Infor has 19,000 paying customers running software on IBM i, i5/OS, and OS/400. And while some in the industry have criticized Infor’s support of the platform, its actions as a whole–and, in particular, comments by Infor executives and product roadmaps shared at last week’s Inforum 2012 conference–demonstrate a firm commitment to the IBM i platform and IBM i customers.

There are some ISVs in the midrange marketplace that seem allergic to anything IBM

  • As I See It: Spooky Action at Great Distance

    April 30, 2012 Victor Rozek

From Alaska to Chile, Norway to New Zealand, 65 random number generators (RNGs) were going about their business generating random numbers. Then the unexplainable happened. But more about that later. The RNGs are part of a larger scientific effort called the Global Coherence Initiative (GCI), a research project that uses a vast array of magnetic field detectors to monitor fluctuations in the earth’s geomagnetic fields. They also measure pulsations and resonances in the ionosphere–the portion of the atmosphere extending approximately 30 to 250 miles above the Earth–associated with what scientists call “excitations.”

  • Power Iron Gets New Storage And Networking

April 30, 2012 Timothy Prickett Morgan

April showers have tended to bring April AS/400 announcements of one sort or another, and here we are again in another April and indeed IBM is making enhancements to its midrange platform in the areas of networking and storage.

Some of the new features in announcement letter 112-069 will work in conjunction with the IBM i operating system, while some will not–even if you are using the Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) as the driver stack between PowerVM logical partitions running IBM i and the new iron. I’ll walk you through all the new features so you know which ones to
