  • Admin Alert: A Checklist For Moving Power i Partitions To A Different Location

    March 6, 2013 Joe Hertvik

With corporate buy-outs, company spin-offs, and moving Power i servers to a centralized data center or a managed server provider, many shops are finding that they need to move their Power i partitions to a different network or a cloud provider. To that end, here’s a checklist I put together to help ensure that your Power i partitions can function without issue in a new environment.

    Why We Move

There are many reasons you might need a playbook for moving a Power i partition from one location and network to another. Some of the more common situations include:

  • When Who Did What

    March 6, 2013 Ted Holt

When you create a new database table (physical file), you should include those columns (fields) that are fully functionally dependent on the key fields. I would like to mention some additional columns that you might like to include also.

The columns to which I refer are ones that store creation and change data. For example, you may want to be able to tell who inserted a row (added a record) and who last changed it. Such information may allow you to give a quick answer to a user’s conundrum.

Look at this simple CREATE TABLE statement. Notice the last six

  • Journal Forensics 101

    March 6, 2013 Steven Wolk

Note: The code accompanying this article is available for download here.

A good friend of mine, who also happens to be president of our local user’s group, had been encouraging me to present a session at one of their meetings. I resisted for some time, but finally decided this was an exciting prospect. The topic I would choose became clear to me almost immediately. We use journaling in my shop for so many purposes that we simply couldn’t survive without it. I’ve always been very interested in journaling, especially in applications of the technology to forensics and recovery.

  • OKI Data to Carry Brooks Print Converters

    March 5, 2013 Alex Woodie

OKI Data Americas, the North American subsidiary of the Japanese printing and telecommunications giant, has inked a deal with Brooks Internet Software to carry the software company’s line of print protocol converters for IBM i, Unix, and mainframe servers.

The co-marketing deal announced last month will ensure that organizations buying printers and other gear from OKI Data Americas will also have the opportunity to buy Brooks’ products, notably ExcelliPrint and RPM Remote Print Manager, as part of the deal. RPM Remote Print Manager is a Line Printer Daemon (LPD) print server designed to provide more flexibility in the management

  • Polaris Chooses IntelliChief for Office Automation

    March 5, 2013 Alex Woodie

Polaris Industries, the $3.2 billion maker of snowmobiles, has selected IntelliChief‘s eponymous software to help it streamline back-office business processes and eliminate paper. The initial IntelliChief implementation will target accounts payable (AP) processes, and will hook into Polaris’ IBM i-based Infor ERP XA application.

IntelliChief is a Windows-based suite of software designed to help IBM i shops transition to electronic documents, or “paperless process management,” as IntelliChief calls it. In its basic configurations, the software provides a simple repository for storing and accessing e-documents. More advanced implementations involve the roll-out of sophisticated scanning and data capture solutions, direct integration

  • Private Clouds Growing at a 50 Percent Clip, IDC Says

    March 5, 2013 Alex Woodie

Worldwide spending on private cloud services will grow at a 50 percent compound annual growth rate through 2016, at which point it will account for $24 billion in spending, according to the latest forecast from the cloud watchers at IDC. The market for IBM i cloud services is growing, too.

IDC splits the hosted private cloud (HPC) services market into two components. There’s the dedicated private cloud, which offers a dedicated, one-to-one physical compute and storage resources, and the virtual private cloud model, which utilizes shared virtualized resources, and which is an adjunct of the public cloud services model.

  • Lieberman Goes Super Secret with Privileged Passwords

    March 5, 2013 Alex Woodie

In old war movies, you’ve probably seen how, before launching a nuclear missile, the captain and his first lieutenant must turn their keys simultaneously for the launch to work. This is actually a security practice instituted by the United States Air Force and other military organizations that’s called the “two man rule.” Last week, security software vendor Lieberman Software launched a version of the two man rule to control the passwords for privileged user profiles.

Lieberman’s flagship product, called Enterprise Random Password Manager (EPRM), is a security utility designed to discover, secure, track, and audit the use of privileged user

  • ARCTOOLS Gains JD Edwards Validations

    March 5, 2013 Alex Woodie

JD Edwards shops upgrading to World A9.3 or EnterpriseOne versions 9.0 and 9.1 can feel good about purging unwanted data from their systems using DCSoftware‘s ARCTOOLS utility now that Oracle has validated the product on those particular ERP systems.

ARCTOOLS helps automate the process of identifying old data in production databases, and moving it into a long term archive. The software works with DB2 for i, SQL Server, and Oracle databases, and allows users to schedule when purge jobs should run, and allows users to “throttle” them back to avoid impacting production systems. DCSoftware counts more than 300 JD

  • Spinnaker Nabs Former Rimini Executive

    March 5, 2013 Alex Woodie

In the third-party maintenance business, we’re accustomed to hearing about Oracle and SAP losing maintenance and support business to the third-party providers. Today, Spinnaker Support is expected to announce that it has hired a key executive away from its primary competitor, Rimini Street.

Nigel Pullan is an ERP industry veteran with more than 30 years of experience with various companies, including 10 years at JD Edwards, where he was senior vice president and general manager for its EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) operations. Pullan was also at TomorrowNow, the now-defunct pioneer in third-party maintenance services founded by Seth

  • Townsend Adopts KMIP for License Key Interoperability

    March 5, 2013 Alex Woodie

Townsend Security is close to shipping a new version of Alliance Key Manager that includes support for Key Management Interoperability Protocol (KMIP), a new standard designed to provide a single method for accessing and managing encryption keys. KMIP support is important for building uniformity into encryption routines. But its usefulness in IBM i environments is limited at this point.

KMIP was first thought up several years ago by a group of security software vendors to provide a standard interface for connecting the encryption key management and generation programs with the encryption routines that consume encryption keys in critical business systems.
