  • As I See It: Thank God It’s Thursday

    August 8, 2022 Victor Rozek

The five-day workweek is generally attributed to Henry Ford, although it actually originated some 18 years earlier. In 1908, a New England cotton mill adopted the practice so Jewish workers would not have to toil on their Sabbath from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. Ford, who ironically was a virulent antisemite, not only embraced the idea but made two notable improvements: His five-day workweek was limited to 40 hours; and, employees did not suffer a decrease in pay.

At the time Ford was paying $5 per day, which doesn’t sound like a princely sum, but his employees were actually able …

  • IBM i PTF Guide, Volume 24, Number 32

    August 8, 2022 Doug Bidwell

It has been a very quiet week on the PTF front for IBM i, which is a good thing after several weeks of lots of security vulnerabilities and other tweaks to the system.

Just a reminder that we have moved V7R1M0 from the weekly update to the archive. Anything new we are informed of that impacts IBM i 7.1, we will post here in the What’s NEW! Section at the top of the story. Also, if you have any IBM i 7.1 requests going forward, we will do our best to provide responses for. Thank you for your readership and …

  • JD Edwards Customers Face Support Decisions

    August 3, 2022 Alex Woodie

JD Edwards was the gold standard for ERP software on the IBM midrange server for many years. But with end-of-support dates looming from Oracle, many JD Edwards customers – especially users of the World package – must make some decisions about the future of their ERP system.

In April, as it has planned for years, Oracle ceased providing premiere support for JD Edwards World, the older, RPG-based ERP package originally developed. This marks the first time in decades that the World product is not under mainstream support from its owner.

However, the software giant will continue to honor extended support …

  • Security, Automation, and Cloud Top Midrange IT Priorities, Study Says

    August 3, 2022 Alex Woodie

Improving cybersecurity continues to be the number one overall priority for IT teams at midsize companies going into the second half of the year, but automation and cloud migrations are not too far behind, according to a recent study from Kaseya. Legacy concerns also are viewed as a drag on productivity.

Kaseya last month published its 2022 IT Operations Report, in which it surveyed 1,877 IT professionals from around the world in April to learn about the top priorities and challenges where they work. The company surveyed only employees at organizations with fewer than 3,000 employees, which is Kaseya’s cut-off …

  • Cleo and SrinSoft in Integration-Modernization Link Up

    August 3, 2022 Alex Woodie

Modernization is a hot topic among organizations that run ERP and industry-specific applications on mature platforms, like the IBM i. But other parts of the stack need modernizing too, including the integration layer, which is the subject of a new partnership between integration software provider Cleo and SrinSoft.

Cleo provides a range of data and application integration solutions as part of its Cleo Integration Cloud (CIC) offering, which connects to backend IBM i systems. The Rockford, Illinois-based company supports API, EDI (AS2), and file-based integration methods via CIC, which is available in Express, Essentials, Business, and Premium versions.

    SrinSoft, …

As often happens with systems software these days, there are a bunch of new security vulnerabilities with the IBM i stack that you need to be aware of.

First, there is Security Bulletin: OpenSSL for IBM i is vulnerable to arbitrary command execution (CVE-2022-2068), which you can find out more about at this link. The IBM i PTF numbers contain the fix for the vulnerability:

  • Power10 Entry Machines: The Power S1022 And Power L1022

August 1, 2022 Timothy Prickett Morgan

This is third part of our in-depth coverage of the entry and midrange Power10 machines that Big Blue launched on July 12, which will focus on the Power S1022 and its Linux-only variant, the Power L1022. Not to be confused with the Power S1022s – that is a small “s” not a plural – that we covered last week.

We will cover the Power S1024 and Power L1024 machines next week, and then finish the series with an analysis of the Power E1050 – which does not support the IBM i operating system but which could any time IBM …

  • Highly Secure API Enablement for IBM i

    August 1, 2022 Daniel Magid

The explosive growth of APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) over the past few years has dramatically transformed how business is conducted. APIs allow customers to increase revenue by leveraging new channels to reach their customers; they facilitate cost reduction by automating manual processes and raising an organization’s responsiveness. In many industries, the benefits of APIs are so compelling that it is already impossible to compete or participate in a business supply chain without supporting APIs.

However, opening up your core IBM i applications to API connections also carries risks. According to the Gartner Group, APIs are rapidly becoming the number one …

  • Guru: IBM i Privileged Account Management, And What’s So Special About Special Authorities

    August 1, 2022 Bruce Bading

Privileged Account Management (PAM) is a keystone of cybersecurity. Everywhere we look PAM is a hot topic. How and why should we worry about it? IBM, Ponemon, Verizon, etc., tell you that it is vitally important to protect your endpoints from cyberattacks and insider threats. While the Verizon DBIR states that external threats account for 80 percent of security incidents, it points out their findings that show otherwise for incidents resulting in data compromise where the insider threat exceeded that of an outsider by more than 10 to one. Simply put by Verizon, “This supports the principle that …
