  • Four Hundred Monitor, March 11

    March 11, 2020 Jenny Thomas

As if you need another reminder of the ubiquitous COVID-19, even our IBM i ecosystem is not immune to the march of this illness. Big Blue has been taking steps to protect employees and prevent the spread, and it’s been lending some computing power to the search for treatments or maybe even a vaccine. At IT Jungle, we already work remotely so we are isolated from a workplace environment, although all of us have school-age children so we aren’t exactly comfortably wrapped in a protective bubble. There are still many safe activities that you can do without fear of the …

February may be the shortest month but sometimes it feels like is might be the longest. That could be because news on the computing front has been a bit slow in the last few weeks as we are getting ready for the announcements that come along with the Spring conference season. As February wraps up, we have a smattering of news to share from around our community, and we hope you’ll be sure to check out the growing list of Chats, Webinars, Seminars, Shows, and Other Happenings in the last section below, where the news is sure to be happening. …

We take great pride in being a respected and reliable purveyor of information in the IBM i ecosystem. But in order to distribute information, we have to find it. In the IBM i world, that data can be hard to come by. Fortunately for us, we have our editor in chief Timothy Prickett Morgan who is able to slice and dice whatever data nuggets he gets and coax out their relevance to our favorite platform. Another valuable resource for data are the surveys more and more players in the IBM i space are conducting. Your responses tell them about your …

At the beginning of the year, there’s always a lot of talk about what the future holds. We’ve done our fair share of prognosticating here in the Jungle. In fact, don’t miss part 2 of our series where we ask industry leaders to tell us what they think will happen next (top link below). IBM is starting off 2020 with lots of attention in the news, which we are going to take as a positive because it’s when they stop talking about you that you should start to get worried. So take a look at the latest headlines on IBM, …

I hope you’re not sick of cloud news yet, because we’re only a few weeks into the New Year and the cloud continues to dominate the headlines. Of course, it’s no surprise there are cloudy skies ahead for the IBM i ecosystems in 2020, but there is lots more to look forward to in the coming months. Our own Co-Editor of The Four Hundred Alex Woodie reached out to ask leaders around our community for their best predictions of what’s to come, and you can see what he found out in our top story below. Then don’t miss the results …

Welcome back! For many of us, this is the first real work week of the new year, full of possibilities and ambitions as we steam ahead into 2020. But just because 2019 is now in the rearview doesn’t mean we can’t take a look back at what a year it was. IT Jungle’s own Alex Woodie recently revisited the biggest IBM i stories of last year, and it’s a fun read and reminder of all that happened during our previous trip around the sun. For a peek into the future, don’t miss IT Jungle editor in chief Timothy Prickett Morgan …

Artificial intelligence is often a hot topic in the news, making it a regular item in the articles we feature here in Monitor. But in an interesting twist, Alain Bénichou, CEO of IBM’s Greater China business, said that in China, which is considered a world leader in AI, while AI adoption is higher than the global average, it is still not as high as expected. This is not to say AI, or the news about it, is going anywhere, but it does give some food for thought about the difference between innovation and real world application. Read on to see …

It may not be a question as old as time, but the debate will rage on for what seems like that long. Mac vs. PC, which is better? Essentially, a Mac is a PC because a PC is a personal computer, which is what a Mac is. But most people associate a PC as a computer that runs the Windows operating system, not the operating system made by Apple. Regardless, in our first story below, IBM’s CIO says Big Blue has found that its employees are happier using Mac devices in the workplace. It’s an interesting development and maybe the …
