  • Four Hundred Monitor, March 11

    March 11, 2020 Jenny Thomas

As if you need another reminder of the ubiquitous COVID-19, even our IBM i ecosystem is not immune to the march of this illness. Big Blue has been taking steps to protect employees and prevent the spread, and it’s been lending some computing power to the search for treatments or maybe even a vaccine. At IT Jungle, we already work remotely so we are isolated from a workplace environment, although all of us have school-age children so we aren’t exactly comfortably wrapped in a protective bubble. There are still many safe activities that you can do without fear of the …

At the beginning of the year, there’s always a lot of talk about what the future holds. We’ve done our fair share of prognosticating here in the Jungle. In fact, don’t miss part 2 of our series where we ask industry leaders to tell us what they think will happen next (top link below). IBM is starting off 2020 with lots of attention in the news, which we are going to take as a positive because it’s when they stop talking about you that you should start to get worried. So take a look at the latest headlines on IBM, …

Artificial intelligence is often a hot topic in the news, making it a regular item in the articles we feature here in Monitor. But in an interesting twist, Alain Bénichou, CEO of IBM’s Greater China business, said that in China, which is considered a world leader in AI, while AI adoption is higher than the global average, it is still not as high as expected. This is not to say AI, or the news about it, is going anywhere, but it does give some food for thought about the difference between innovation and real world application. Read on to see …

November is the month that reminds us to stop and think about the positive things in our lives and remember to be thankful for all those good things. In our personal lives, family and health are probably at the top of your list. At IT Jungle, our readers and advertisers are at the top of ours. We continue to be thankful for this platform and its ecosystem that gives us life, and to the people who read our articles every week who give us purpose. Now that we have shared our gratitude, we’d like to share the news of the …

In my house, the news of the day is the Houston Astros making a second run at the World Series. If baseball isn’t your thing, you have come to the right place. We have the news you are looking for from in and around the IBM i and our IT community. One article we point out this week actually comes from IT Jungle, but it is so relevant to what we do here in Monitor that it could not be overlooked. Our resident technical guru, Ted Holt, offered up a tip this week that also served as a wonderful reminder …

It’s a big day for IBM. Big Blue will be reporting its Q3 earnings this afternoon and there are a lot of expectations on what results may, or may not, be seen from the Red Hat acquisition, among other possibilities. Of course, you can expect to see some slicing and dicing of IBM’s numbers, as well as what it may mean for our IBM i ecosystem, in future issues of The Four Hundred, but until then, please read on to check out what’s been happening around IT this past week.

The term “DevOps” dates back to 2008. The idea behind the word is that organizations bring together development and operations teams to create and improve products at a faster pace than they can with traditional software development approaches. DevOps on IBM i certainly isn’t a new concept, but it seems to be on everyone’s minds this week. As we look at the news of the week, “DevOps” kept popping up and this seemed like as good a time as any to take a look at why it’s gone from a concept to mainstream priority in IT departments everywhere. Check out …

Summer came to an end this week, although it certainly doesn’t seem that way in Southern California where temperatures are still topping 90 degrees. With the onset of fall comes the promise of tech news as conference season gets back underway and the companies that sell hardware and software look to get into the 2020 budgets of the companies that will be looking to buy hardware and software in the new year. Whiles we linger in this limbo between summer and fall, take a gander on what’s been happening around IT in the last week, and don’t miss the Calendar …

This week, Steve Will, Chief Architect of the IBM i, tweeted out the link this week for new followers. It’s interesting to think there are still new followers popping up, but if you’re one of the Twitter holdout, you might want to consider giving it a try. The Twitter-verse gives us direct access to the movers and shakers of our ecosystem (not to mention the writers of IT Jungle), and it’s a great place to see the chatter around our little ecosystem. Of course, if you still don’t think Twitter is for you, you can always count on Four Hundred …
