  • IBM i PTF Guide, Volume 23, Number 32

    August 11, 2021 Doug Bidwell

Another day, another security vulnerability in an enterprise software stack. This one is not in an open source software package, or Windows Server, but in the Hardware Management Console, or HMC, for high-end Power Systems servers. Specifically, you need to be aware of Security Bulletin: Vulnerability in bind used by Power Hardware Management Console (HMC).(CVE-2021-25215), which you can read at this link.

In this edition of the IBM i PTF Guide, we want to remind you once again that when you go to Fix Central at IBM to download PTFs to patch your IBM i operating systems and related systems software, you must use an encrypted variant of FTP to do so – that’s FTPS or SFTP, depending – as of July 10. If you follow all of the links starting with the Fix Central homepage, you will eventually get to this link right here, which tells you how to configure SFTP on your machine. We interpret this to mean that …

Attention all IBM i shops. You may not be aware of it, but FTP is changing to FTPS/SFTP (secure) before the end of June or in early July 2021. (It’s not clear.) All orders submitted just prior to the change will be removed.

Also, many thanks to Ron Schmitz for the IMGCLG link that I added to the IBM i PTF Guide sheet this week, which you will see below in its usual place.

And finally, for those of you who are in the United States, happy July 4th holiday, and for those of you who are not, why …

We are playing a little catch up after the Memorial Day holiday here in IBM i PTF Land. It was fairly quiet over the holiday weekend, with a set of PTF updates for the Hardware Management Console. To be specific, take a look at PTFs MH01889 and MH01890, which are an interim fix, or ifix as IBM calls them, for HMC V9 R2 M951 running on virtualized X86 or Power servers, respectively. Hello everyone. First, a reminder. Our apologies, ACS 1.1.8.7 is the most current version of ACS, and is not being pulled in favor of 1.1.8.8. Assumptions were made at the case level that were later resolved and not communicated to us. Again, our apologies. The current version if you apply the fix will read “TESTFIX_1.1.8.7” in the Help/About. If you download the ZIP file, the Help/About will read “1.1.8.7 Build 1170” if it includes the fix.

Here is a link to the document that tells you how to do this and here is the link to the patch itself. …

As The Four Hundred reported last week, there is a major bug in Access Client Solutions 1.1.8.7. Our apologies, ACS 1.1.8.7 is the most current version and is not being pulled in favor of 1.1.8.8, as we originally said last week and then corrected. Assumptions were made at the case level that were later resolved and not communicated to us. Again, our apologies, but IBM bears some responsibility for the lack of communication, too.

The current version if you apply the fix will read “TESTFIX_1.1.8.7” in the Help About document. If you download the Zip file, the Help About …
